THE WEDDING NIGHT BETRAYAL

They say you only die once. Aurelia Vale died twice. The first time by a dagger. The second time by betrayal. Snow bled over the Azure Moon Garden. Cold. Silent. Deadly. The wind carried incense and blood. But not as cold as the hands that held the blade. Aurelia stood in a wedding gown the color of spilled blood. Crimson. The color of her kingdom. Not love. Never love. The silk was heavy. Ten layers of it. Each layer embroidered with golden dragons that curled around her ribs like chains. They sneered at her. A thousand scales, a thousand eyes. Tomorrow, she would be crowned Queen of Azure. Tonight, she would die. The cold bit through the silk and into her bones. Her breath came out in white clouds. She did not shiver. Vales did not shiver. Vales burned. _________ Two hours earlier, the throne room stank of perfume and politics. Phoenix incense curled from golden braziers, thick and cloying. It couldn’t hide the stench of ambition. Sweat. Fear. Old men who had been rotting in their seats for forty years. "Marry him, Your Highness." The council hissed. Twelve of them. Old men with jade pendants that clicked like dead bones when they moved. "Or watch Azure drown in civil war." She was the last heir of House Vale. The last drop of royal blood. Heiress. Princess. Cage. Her mother’s crown sat on a velvet pillow before her. It had not been worn in three generations. Not since the Empress of Ash. It was made of black iron and bone. No jewels. Vales did not need light to be seen. She had worn the crown in her mind long before it touched her hair. Heavy. Cruel. A thousand queens had died under it. Starved. Poisoned. Betrayed. She would be the last. "I marry a stranger," she told her reflection in the polished obsidian floor. Her voice did not echo. It sank. "So ten thousand won’t die. But Vales do not kneel. Even in death." Caelan Blackthorne. Her fiancé. Her executioner. He stood across the hall. Cold. Perfect. Black armor etched with a raven, its wings spread over his heart. Ravens feast on corpses. He wore his house sigil like a promise. His face was carved from winter. High cheekbones. A mouth that did not smile unless it meant to cut. Beside him, Lady Lysandra smiled too. Sweet. Poisoned. Azure blue gown. The exact shade of the royal banner. The exact shade of a lie. Aurelia saw it. Lysandra’s fingers on Caelan’s sleeve. A touch too familiar. A touch too bold for a lady-in-waiting. He didn’t pull away. The council looked away. Because they had already chosen. Tragedy wasn’t coming. It was already drinking their wine. _________ Now, the garden. Moonlight bled silver over a frozen fountain. The water had choked on ice a week ago. No one had bothered to break it. Stone dragons watched from the pillars with hollow eyes. Judging. Counting. The wedding altar stood under a dead cherry tree. Its branches were bare. Black. Like fingers reaching for heaven and finding nothing. Caelan stepped forward. Armor clicking against the stone. Each step measured. No hesitation. No warmth. Only duty carved into his face. The face she was told to call ‘husband’. "Forgive me," he said. His voice didn’t shake. That was worse. A lie would have been kinder. "The throne needs a queen without a claim." Her claim. Her birthright. The blood of the First Empress, who had split the sky with a blade and bled gold. The blood that now ran too hot under her skin. Steel kissed her heart first. Fast. Clean. A court dagger. Blackthorne steel. Aurelia gasped. Not from pain. From how easy it was. How little a lifetime of loyalty meant. How little her name meant to him. Then Lysandra. From behind. A small, poisoned blade slid between her ribs like a lover’s whisper. Venom colder than snow. It burned. It froze. It laughed. Died twice. Blood filled her mouth. Hot. Metallic. Copper and winter. She tasted iron and roses. She laughed anyway. A wet, broken sound that made Lysandra flinch. Because Vales did not beg. "Then rule over ashes, Caelan," she choked. Blood on her teeth. Fire in her eyes. The fire of a house that had burned kingdoms before. "Azure will burn for this. I will make sure of it." He didn’t blink. Not once. The last heiress of House Vale fell. Royal blood turned the snow red. It spread in slow petals across the white. Her wedding gown became her shroud. The golden dragons drank it and finally, finally, stopped sneering. _________ Faceless guards dragged her. Ravens, not dragons. Loyal to gold, not blood. Their hands were rough. They did not look at her face. To the edge of the world. The Dragon Abyss. A pit so deep the sky had forgotten it. Black mist coiled from its mouth like a dead god’s breath. It smelled of rot and old magic. Broken chains hung from the cliffs—remnants of the first Xianxia cultivators who tried to seal it and failed. Their bones were part of the stone now. Whispers crawled up the stone. The dead. The dragons. Hungry. They knew royal blood when they smelled it. "Throw her," one guard said. They did not pray. They threw her in. The fall was endless. Wind screamed past her ears. Ice bit her skin. Her blood froze before it could fall. Her red gown tore against the rocks, ribbons of crimson vanishing into the dark. No memories of joy flashed. No childhood. No laughter. Only duty. Only a cage. Only the weight of a crown she never got to wear. If this is the end, she thought as darkness took her, then let my death be their nightmare. Let the crown choke him. Let them remember the name they erased. Let them remember Aurelia Vale. And the abyss answered. The cold stopped. The wind stopped. The pain stopped. The whispers became a chorus. Hundreds of voices. Thousands. All speaking as one. Not human. Not dragon. Older. "Aurelia Vale." Her eyes snapped open in the dark. They were gold. Not brown. Not human. Molten. The blood in her veins boiled. _________ Far above, Caelan stared at the empty abyss. The snow was red. The queen was gone. But the air… the air smelled like smoke.
