chapter 9

Delilah Lucas must have discovered that am not at home right now because he kept calling my line again and again. I had to lie to my dad about attending a friend's bridal shower so that I can leave that house for the night. I know you guys must be wondering why I have to lie before leaving the house. The thing is that am very careful around Mr. Peter, careful not to disappoint him. So most times, if I want to do something that I think he will frown upon, I just lie. This life isn't just mine again; it's also Mr. Peter's. I owe him this life... I turned to the phone ringing again for the tenth or eleventh time... I've lost count, I clicked on the decline and the call ended. A text message from him followed immediately 'If you don't pick up or let me know you are okay, am sending the security men out for a search party. PS you know I don't bluff' I sent him a short text containing just two words 'I'm fine'. He seems to be satisfied with the text because he never called again. I spent the night at the hotel and the next morning, I drove home very much aware that dad and Lucas have already left for work. I freshened up, dressed up and left for work pretty fast. I must say am looking forward to today's meeting with the Grey's, I made a mental note to ask Daddy if he has fixed the mole as we earlier discussed. Immediately I got to my office, my secretary greeted me and followed me immediately to give me my schedule for today but I told her to give me few minutes so I can get myself ready for the day. I opened my door but yelped back in surprise when I saw a handsome looking Lucas comfortably relaxed on my seat. "What are you doing here? You almost scared me to death" He stood up and approached me "didn't mean to but sorry if I did" "Why are you here? I don't remember having any of your files or any meeting with you. So what are you doing here?" "I came to apologize for yesterday" I huffed in annoyance "so it couldn't wait until am all settled in or until I get home?" He ran his hand over his head, something he seem to be doing more often these days "Del... Am sorry okay, I don't just know what came over me. I seem to be saying anything that comes to my head and am sorry" I looked at him... Like really looked at him and then I saw it, I saw the dark circles underneath his eyes, I saw how tired his eyes looked and how he is also trying hard to control his anger right now. "Did you even sleep last night Lucas?" "I couldn't sleep knowing you left the comfort of your bed because your were angry with me" I blinked owlishly "I left the comfort of my bed to a very similar one. You shouldn't have stayed up because of that!!!" He shrugged "guess I was punishing myself for making you leave" I took him by the arm and led him to the empty cushion "what is happening to you Lucas? You seem to get angry at every little thing and you keep saying things that hurt others. Are you on something?" "Are you asking me if am on any hard drugs?" He hissed "You're getting angry again. Talk to me Lucas, what is happening to you?" He ran his hand through his hair again "I don't know Del, I don't know what's wrong with me, and I get angry at every little thing. I even punched Ken hard on the face yesterday" "You did what!!!!?" I shrieked "why did you do that? To stop me from going on a date with him? Is that why you punched him on the face?" "I didn't punch him to stop him from on the date with you" he mumbled "I punched him because I felt he was the reason for our fight yesterday and when you didn't come home, I lost it" "You can't go around punching people for your mistake Lucas!!" His eyes turned dark at my raised voice "it's his fault that we even had that conversation yesterday. I warned him...I warned him not to ask you out for that date but he didn't listen to me and then we fought because of it and we are still fighting because of it!!!!" Both of us getting upset is not going to get us anywhere "calm down Lucas, you don't have to get angry over this. How about you talk to someone?" "Talk to someone? You mean like a therapist? You want me to talk to someone about why am always angry? Is that what you are telling me!!!? He shouted "Lucas you have to stop shouting at me am only trying to help you... Look at you Lucas... You are like a shell of yourself. You have to talk to someone before you finally lose it" He pressed the heel of his hand into his head "you know what; let's not talk about this again. You refused to see a doctor and I refuse to see a therapist that is that. You need me to go with you to the meeting with the Grey's?" "No, I can handle it; I need you to look after yourself" "Jeez Del just drop it okay. I'll be in my office. Let me know how they meeting went when you get back okay?" "Okay" He kissed my forehead and left the room, muttering under his breath. I collapsed on my seat while trying to stop the margarine from coming up again. I need to increase my dosage. At exactly ten in the morning, I was on my way to Grey's Enterprise and by the time I got there, everybody was set for the meeting all expect Juliana. So I had to sit with Jake and his co workers for about thirty minutes before Juliana showed up. "Is this some kind of sick joke to you? If you want to work with me, then you'll have to learn to keep to time" I fired at her "You'll have to show her some respect Miss Davidson, she's not your employee" Jake fired back I glared at him "when two people who are obviously higher than you are talking, learn to keep your mouth shut. You think am here to spend the whole day with you?" Juliana dropped her bag on the desk and sat down "am sorry for keeping you waiting, I had to attend to family matters" "Family matter that can't wait till this meeting is over?" "If your father happen to have a heart attack Miss Davidson, will you still be here?" She asked Mr. Grey had an attack? I made a mental note to check the news later to make sure his fine "am sorry, I didn't know that the family matter was this severe" "Of course you wouldn't know..." Jake rasped What is his f*****g problem? If not as if Delilah have ever crossed his path "you want to get something off your chest Mr. Jake because if you do, then am all ears" Juliana didn't give him the chance to say anything because she spoke to me even before he could "pardon him Miss Davidson, am sure he will put himself in check" I eyed him "he better do that" "Yeah least I forget, your father suggested that we make few changes in our staff and I think he's right. So I employed four new staffs" she pointed towards each of them "David, Jethro, Seth and Justine" They said their hellos and sat down. I knew that instant that one of these guys is my father's mole. Of course Juliana will be quick in accepting his suggestion as she wants to impress him at all cost. Little did she know that my father had something else in mind? We discussed the necessary things needed for the commencement of the project. At the end of the meeting, I gave them each assignments to get a great cover design for the vehicle. The only one exempted from the task is Juliana and they all promised to do their best, all of them except Jack who was busy brooding. I entered my car with a triumphant grin on my face. My first task is to cause a rift between them and the best way to do that is to ask Juliana to send Jake out of the team. Something that I know Juliana will definitely do because she is so eager to impress us. Immediately I got to the office, my brother was on neck "How did it go?" "As it was meant to be Lucas, I went for a business meeting not a war zone" "Well being in the same room with those lunatics is the same as being in a war room" I turned to him, to tell him my next course of action "am going to cause a rift between them" He blinked once. Twice "between who?" "Jeez Lucas... Who are we discussing? Juliana and Jake of course" "Why? How is that going to benefit you, benefit us?" "You see Lucas... When a broom is in a bunch, it's difficult to break, but when it's just a broom stick, it's very easy to break" "So you want case enmity between them?" I smiled wide "bingo" "Is Dad aware of this plan?" "His only concern is that he doesn't want to lose the money he's inventing in that company. How I want to handle them is up to me" He nodded in understanding "is there anything you want me to help you with?" I patted him on his shoulder "I want you to just sit down and watch" "Any popcorn needed?" "A whole lot of them Lucas...a whole lot of them" I heard him laughing behind me as I made my way towards my office. Since dinner with Ken seem to have been cancelled as he isn't picking my calls or answering my text messages, not that I even want to attend the dinner again. Not after my fight with Lucas. Even though he behaved like an asshole, but he is still my brother and am going to respect his wishes to stay away from his friends. I opted to cook for my family tonight, since I finished early at the office today. I was almost done when my dad entered the kitchen, probably to grab a bottle of water. "Why are you the one cooking? Where is the cook?" "They are in their quarter, I gave them the night off" I replied still giving the sauce a final stir "Is there a reason behind you deciding to cook tonight?" "Nope... Just felt like it" I turned to him "why don't you go sit at the table while I get the maids to help me serve" "Have you heard from Lucas?" "No... His probably still at the office" He didn't ask any other question but rather carried his bottle of water into the dining room. As if on cue, I heard Lucas greeting him and he asked him about me. He replied but I couldn't hear what he said to him. Lucas appeared at the door way within minutes "Heard you decided to make dinner today" I can feel that he's about to tease me "good evening to you too Lucas... And yes I decided to make dinner" He snickered "are we supposed to have the doctor on our speed dial?" I threw the empty hot dog can at him "just go get ready for dinner Lucas and stop pestering me" "Fine am going, just wanted to know what to and what not to do" I ignored him and focused on the task at hand and before the next twenty minutes, we were all seated at the dining table eating. "So who did you plant as the mole?" I asked my father but Lucas snorted beside me "Jethro, I know they will employ him, his resume was very impressive" "So how did you make him agree to work for you?" Lucas asked him "With money Lucas everything is possible" And I can see how possible this plan is going to be.
