"What the hell, what did you just do?" Jason stared at her shocked, but she just smirked back ad then looked at e again.
"Come on, we are right in front of our goal," I called everyone back to the task at hand, and then looked at Haiiro to lead the way again, ad this time he went forth without hesitancy, taking off in a sprint and vanishing around the corner where we started hearing people screaming after a few seconds, fearing the worst I ran off as well rushing to stop him from killing anyone, but upon arriving to the next person I found the man unconscious and laid against the wall, and close to the next end was another man strewn out and breathing heavily with his foot facing behind him and his fingers broken while a twisted gun at his side it looked brutal.
"What's gotten into him all of a sudden?" Justin asked walking by e and leaning over the man in front of us first as we heard several more screams going off simultaneously. "His sheepish personality was just a sham?" He looked at me but I shook my head at that claim, that was incorrect; Haiiro was never shy or timid to begin with, he was always like this, at least since his resurrection.
"He is acting on impulse and instinct, but if he is leaving them alive then whatever he does to them is of no significance right?" I shrugged and continued down into the vertically declining cave.
We found several more severely but not fatally wounded people as we descended and after a few minutes of casually walking we finally made it to a large door where we found the boy standing under the silhouette of a large glowing door with a tower of steam rising off his hand.
"I cannot open this door it hurts to even touch it," Haiiro looked around at us, and I wrung my neck and crackled my knuckles as I resolved to give it a shot as well. "What are you doing?"
"It was the same for your barrier when I and Justin came to free you," I answered him, reaching for the door and resting my hand on it as my skin suddenly caught ablaze to the touch, naturally, I retreated from initial contact, but I had a reason why I would even attempt this after what happened the last time; Shiro told me that in order for me to beal a barrier designed to keep me out I needed to be stronger than the person who created it, and it was obvious from the design that this was completely different to the first one we discovered, I needed to far supersede the powers of the shaman, monk, or whoever was responsible for it, she said four tails, but if history was right then there was never truly another Kitsune who tried breaking any other out aside from her, and she already had four tails when she started so how could she know?"
"Be careful." She warned me, but I bypassed that warning as if it were the wind on my cheeks and slammed my hands on the door a second time, pressing my palm until I started seeing the stress of the barrier being opposed when ripples of light started travelling across the door to the sides and bouncing back like waves atop a still body of water.
It hurt, of course, it hurt; it was like holding raw fire, or a hot pot, I could feel my fingers almost tearing apart from the heat being generated between the door and my hands, but still nothing, at the very least it didn't send me flying as the last one did.
"What exactly are you trying to accomplish?" Justin asked as my tails turned to flames and my ears tilted down while I gnawed at the insides of my mouth and hissed, I wanted this barrier to break, it had to break; I needed it to break; I purposed it in my mind that this was a must, that it had to happen.
"Come on!" I started exerting myself when the barrier nor the door showed sins of rupture, it was frustrating, what if it was just me, how would I have freed them?
"Seiya, be careful," Shiro warned me again, but again I ignored her warning and dug my hands into the energy that made the barrier, leaning my body against it as my feet tore through the shoes I was wearing and dug into the ground, what did all this strength matter if I couldn't even open up a measly door, what good was it then to be a creature of myth and mystical origins with otherworldly powers if something this simple was going to stop me every time?
"Kay, take it easy," Justin took me by my shoulders and pulled me away, grabbing my arms and raising my hands to my face, it had hurt so much that I had become numb to my own flesh being peeled off and revealing the bones at the tips of my fingers. "Stop." He shook them.
"Shiro, what exactly happens if I try absorbing this barrier?" I asked, looking around at her, and she was still and silent staring at my hands.
"Maybe let someone else do it?" Doctor Cidelle who had seen her expression suggested, taking a step toward us with a nod and a wave of his hand at me, but I dragged myself from Justin and turned to the barrier again; why, why did I have the power to level a city but not the power to free my own kind, I could jump as high as the clouds, run so fast I skipped across water, I could destroy islands and tear down mountains, but this simple barrier was beating me, I felt powerless.
"Look, I know you don't want to be dependent on anyone, you feel obligated to them, but you need to stop acting as if you are alone, you have friends and supporters, others that are more than willing to stick their necks out for you, Kay, you can't do it yet, so let someone who can do it take the risk, for now." Justin locked his fingers with mine and reached for the door easily bypassing the barrier and pushing it open with his other hand, I know he just wanted to help, but seeing him do it so easily made me even more furious, this was ridiculous!
"Fine," I closed my eyes and released that pent-up anger as he let go of me and stepped through the barrier, pushing the massive doors open and stopping, it was not what we expected, the other shrine was small and looked like some kind of coffin with the runes and seals on it, but this one was much bigger, and by the expansion of the space itself, I would say it was much older as well, it looked almost ancient.
"So this is where you ended up." Shiro went close to the barrier and stopped just a breath away from it with her hands folded behind her back as she tried looking in.
"Do you know the one trapped inside?" I asked her, and she looked around at me, and as she did Justin also looked around at me, he was already cautious because of the potential threat behind every door, so this was definitely going to spark his interest.
"I can sense the bitterness inside of him." She spoke again, and Justin looked right at her, almost as if he could actually see her. "How long has it been?" She asked, causing Haiiro to look up at her as well.
"Shiro, are they friend or foe?" I asked, and she stared down at me with a disapproving glance and then looked to the shrine garden on the other side again, it reminded me of a snow globe, holding a piece of time inside of it that withstood the tests of time and remained stagnant and beautiful.
"Behind this barrier is the one who betrayed me ten thousand years ago, I willfully forgot his name, and his face, but I could never get rid of the scent nor his presence from my memories, they are burnt into my very soul." She answered slowly and then looked at me again. "I know your desire is to free them all, but a malevolent Kitsune with a grudge against their own kind is a dangerous entity, it might be a wise choice to let him sleep.
"Why would he have a grudge against us?" I asked again, and as I asked Justin walked right back to the edge of the barrier and stood outside staring at me.
"What's this about a grudge?" He asked.
"Ancestor is saying that the one sealed here might attack us if we set him free because he has some kind of grudge against his own kind," Haiiro answered in my stead and Justin sighed and folded his arms.
"After all we've been through we are supposed to just leave him in there then?" He asked and I looked back at Shiro for more answers.
"How dangerous is this Kitsune then?" I raised the question on everyone's mind and she lowered herself to my level and stared me in the eyes.
"He had three tails, though the last time I saw him he was not as skilled nor as strong as you are currently the chances that he is stronger now are almost certain, it is better to let him be." She answered honestly and I closed my eyes and hissed.
"Is there no other way, like reasoning with him?"I asked, seeking a sort of compromise and she shook her head profusely at the question.
"He betrayed me to gain the favour of the humans, if they have sealed him then it is very likely that he was betrayed by them, once he is free he might go on another rampage, I wish to see him free just as you do, but Sora can not be trusted." She was firm on the decision to keep him locked away.
"I have already broken free of that wretched prison, Sister." Came a voice from inside the dark of the large house-like shrine, soft and smooth, speaking in the Japanese language with a tone that was carried throughout the entire cave. "I have been free for two thousand years, waiting for some fool to push those doors and set me free so I can finish what I started, and annihilate every last human from the face of this world for what happened to you, but who would have imagined that you would have already been free, traitorous human lover… " He spoke again, and I saw two large sky-blue eyes pierce the darkness as the head of a white Fox came poking out, if he was sealed away since her time, and has been awake for the last two thousand years, then this was much worse than we anticipated.
"He has eight tails…" Haiiro stared into the shrine shocked and equally terrified when he counted the number of tails that swerved slowly to the dance of a windless purgatory in the darkness.
"What is going on here?" Cidelle stood at the edge of the barrier staring at the inside. "What does he mean to finish that he started, the war started and ended with her did it not?" He asked, and I looked at Shiro, it made sense if he was truly her brother, the white Fox, and her, Shiroi-no-mono, it was arguable that she did half the things she was accused of or claimed to do what the hell was going on indeed?
"Shiro, explain this, I do not understand." I stared at her with my eyes wide and my brows wrinkled. "Please make sense of what I just heard." I held on to her, injecting my energy into her in such vast amounts that she started materialising into the physical plain, had I even known I was capable of that I would have done so long ago, but that was beside the point, he was right, then she has been lying and protecting his identity, and taking the blame in his stead.
"Nothing he is saying makes sense, one of you is lying, tell me what is going on," I kept my hold on her as her feet made contact with the ground and her long hair that had always weightlessly floated about fell across her back.
"I doubted her existence but damn…" Tori commented with her mouth half agape.
"If you are willing to speak sister, then I will tell them," Sora spoke again, getting an immediate translation to the others from Haiiro who seemed completely invested in what was happening.
