Their first encounter feels less like coincidence and more like a warning.
Rain fell over the city like static.
Not violent.
Not soft.
Just constant enough to blur lights into long silver streaks across the glass walls of downtown Jakarta.
Dr. Chloe Rain stood inside the underground parking structure beneath the Interpol annex building, staring at the crime scene photographs displayed on her tablet while distant thunder rolled somewhere above the city skyline.
Level B4.
Minimal surveillance.
Controlled access points.
Bad architecture for safety.
Perfect architecture for disappearance.
The newest victim had vanished less than four hours ago.
Female. Twenty-nine. Cybersecurity consultant.
Last seen entering the parking structure at 8:42 PM.
Never seen leaving.
No screams.
No witnesses.
No body.
Just absence.
Chloe crouched near the parking slot where the victim’s vehicle remained untouched beneath the cold fluorescent lighting.
Everything felt wrong.
Not messy wrong.
Measured wrong.
The driver’s door remained closed. The handbag still sat on the passenger seat. Coffee cup untouched in the center console.
People interrupted during a*******n left fragmentation behind.
Panic displaced objects.
Fear created disorder.
But this—
This looked paused.
As if the victim had willingly stepped out of reality for a moment and never returned.
A forensic officer approached carefully.
“We found partial prints,” he said.
“Belonging to?”
“Victim only.”
Chloe nodded once.
Expected.
“What about blind spots?”
The officer hesitated.
“That’s the strange part.”
Her eyes lifted.
“The cameras glitched exactly two minutes before the estimated disappearance window.”
Of course they did.
“Localized failure?”
“No,” he replied quietly. “Selective failure.”
That made her expression harden slightly.
“Meaning?”
The officer swallowed.
“Every camera facing this section shut down simultaneously. All surrounding cameras continued recording normally.”
A surgical blackout.
Not technical malfunction.
Intentional isolation.
Chloe slowly stood.
Her mind was already reconstructing behavioral structure.
Organized offender.
High-level system access.
Predictive planning.
No improvisation.
The pattern was escalating.
And escalation meant confidence.
She turned toward the dark concrete corridor leading deeper into the parking structure.
The lights flickered once overhead.
Then stabilized.
Something about the corridor bothered her immediately.
Not visually.
Instinctively.
She began walking toward it.
“Dr. Rain,” the officer called carefully, “that area hasn’t been cleared yet.”
“I know.”
Her footsteps echoed softly against the concrete floor.
The deeper she moved into the structure, the quieter the world became.
No traffic sounds.
No voices.
Only the distant electric hum of fluorescent lights.
And rain somewhere far above.
Her profiler instincts sharpened.
Criminal environments retained emotional residue.
Not literally.
Behaviorally.
People left themselves behind in spaces.
Fear shaped atmosphere.
Violence altered rhythm.
And suddenly—
She stopped walking.
Something had changed.
Not around her.
Inside her perception.
A subtle shift.
Like being watched.
Chloe slowly turned her head.
Nothing.
Empty corridor.
Concrete pillars.
Shadow.
Then—
Movement.
A figure standing near the far end of the structure.
Tall.
Still.
Dressed entirely in black.
Her pulse did not increase.
But her awareness narrowed instantly.
The figure didn’t move closer.
Didn’t speak.
Simply watched her from the shadows beneath the flickering lights.
And then Chloe noticed the gloves.
Black leather.
Perfectly fitted.
Covering both hands.
Something cold slid quietly through her thoughts.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Predators concealed fingerprints.
Professionals concealed identity.
But gloves in controlled environments carried another meaning too:
Preparation.
The figure tilted his head slightly.
Not threatening.
Observing.
And even from this distance, Chloe felt it immediately—
Control.
The same suffocating composure she had felt during her first meeting with James Dean Luca.
Her voice remained calm.
“Who are you?”
Silence answered.
The figure stepped forward once.
Fluorescent light briefly illuminated part of his face.
Not enough for certainty.
But enough for familiarity.
Sharp jawline.
Dark eyes.
Stillness.
And then she knew.
Not logically.
Instinctively.
James.
But something about him felt different here.
Less polished.
Less civilized.
As if the city above required him to wear a mask he no longer needed underground.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Chloe said quietly.
His voice emerged from the darkness smooth and controlled.
“And yet you came anyway.”
The sound of it settled beneath her skin instantly.
Measured.
Calm.
Dangerous because it refused to sound dangerous.
Chloe crossed her arms slowly.
“You followed me.”
“No,” he replied. “I arrived before you.”
That answer disturbed her more than accusation would have.
Because it implied awareness.
Preparation.
Possibly anticipation.
She studied him carefully.
No visible tension in posture.
No defensive stance.
No urgency.
People connected to crime scenes usually behaved in one of two ways:
Anxious avoidance.
Or performative cooperation.
James Dean Luca behaved like neither.
He looked completely at home.
The realization tightened something in her chest.
“You knew another disappearance would happen,” she said.
A faint pause.
Then:
“I knew the pattern would continue.”
Not denial.
Never denial.
Always redirection.
Chloe stepped closer.
Concrete echoed beneath her heels.
“You speak about this like you’re outside it.”
“Aren’t I?”
Her eyes sharpened.
“No.”
For the first time, a small expression touched his face.
Approval.
As if he respected that answer.
Rainwater dripped somewhere deeper in the structure.
Steady.
Rhythmic.
Chloe stopped a few feet away from him now.
Close enough to study detail.
The black gloves.
Immaculate.
Not a single drop of rain or dust touching them.
Intentional.
Everything about him was intentional.
“Why gloves?” she asked suddenly.
His gaze lowered briefly toward his hands.
Then returned to her.
“You profile details,” he said softly. “I was curious how long it would take before you asked.”
Deflection again.
But strategic.
Because now the conversation centered around her observation rather than his explanation.
Classic conversational displacement.
Chloe recognized the tactic instantly.
And hated that part of her admired it.
“You avoid direct answers,” she said.
“And you rely too heavily on direct questions.”
Silence.
A dangerous silence.
Because neither of them were truly discussing the case anymore.
They were studying each other through it.
Chloe’s instincts warned her to regain control immediately.
But something else—something quieter and more reckless—wanted to see how far this interaction could go before it fractured.
“You were at the previous locations too, weren’t you?” she asked.
Another pause.
Then:
“Yes.”
The answer hit harder because it came without hesitation.
No concern.
No attempt to protect himself.
Almost like he wanted her to know.
Chloe felt the first genuine flicker of unease.
Not because of his admission.
Because she still couldn’t determine motive.
“What are you doing there?” she demanded.
James looked at her for a long moment.
Long enough for tension to become physical.
Then he answered carefully.
“Watching.”
The word settled heavily between them.
Watching.
Not participating.
Not intervening.
Watching.
Like an observer standing beside catastrophe without attempting to stop it.
Chloe’s voice hardened.
“People are disappearing.”
“I know.”
“You’re connected to every location.”
“I know.”
“You admit you were present.”
“Yes.”
Her frustration sharpened.
“Then why are you still free?”
That made him smile slightly.
Not mockingly.
Sadly.
“Asking the right question finally.”
Something about that response sent a chill through her body.
Because it sounded less like arrogance—
and more like warning.
The fluorescent light above them flickered again.
This time longer.
The shadows shifted sharply across his face, briefly cutting him into fragments of darkness and pale light.
Monster.
Man.
Unknown.
Chloe hated that her mind kept moving between all three.
“You’re manipulating this investigation,” she said quietly.
“No.”
“You’re manipulating me.”
That made him still completely.
The silence stretched.
Then he stepped closer.
Only one step.
But enough for the air between them to tighten instantly.
When he spoke again, his voice lowered.
“If I were manipulating you, Dr. Rain…”
His eyes locked onto hers.
“…you wouldn’t notice it happening.”
Her heartbeat betrayed her then.
One sharp pulse.
Annoyingly human.
Chloe held his gaze anyway.
Refused to retreat.
Refused to surrender ground psychologically.
But the problem with James Dean Luca was becoming terrifyingly clear.
He didn’t dominate conversations.
He destabilized certainty.
Slowly.
Precisely.
Like removing structural bolts from a building one at a time until collapse became inevitable.
“You think you understand people,” he continued softly.
“I do.”
“No,” he said. “You understand behavior.”
The distinction hit deeper than she expected.
Because part of her knew he was right.
Profiling was prediction.
Pattern recognition.
Statistical psychology wrapped in human language.
But understanding?
True understanding required emotional proximity.
And Chloe had spent her entire life avoiding that exact thing.
“You read monsters,” James said.
“And?”
“You’ve never asked why they became monsters in the first place.”
The words lingered heavily in the cold underground air.
Chloe’s jaw tightened slightly.
“You don’t know anything about me.”
A faint smile touched his lips again.
“That’s the first untrue thing you’ve said tonight.”
Before she could answer, movement echoed from somewhere above them.
Voices.
Security approaching.
James glanced briefly toward the sound.
Then back at her.
And for the first time since this encounter began—
she saw something unguarded in his expression.
Concern.
Not for himself.
For her.
“You should leave,” he said quietly.
Chloe frowned immediately.
“Why?”
But he didn’t answer.
Instead, his eyes shifted toward the corridor behind her.
Instinct reacted before logic.
She turned sharply.
Nothing there.
When she looked back—
he was already moving away.
Silent.
Controlled.
Disappearing deeper into shadow.
“James.”
He stopped.
Only briefly.
Without turning around.
Chloe’s voice echoed softly across the concrete.
“What are you warning me about?”
Several seconds passed.
Then finally—
“The pattern isn’t selecting victims randomly anymore.”
Her breath slowed.
“What does that mean?”
This time he looked back at her over his shoulder.
And the expression in his eyes unsettled her more than anything else had tonight.
Not menace.
Not cruelty.
Recognition.
“You’ve been noticed.”
Then the lights went out.
Total darkness swallowed the corridor instantly.
Voices shouted somewhere above.
Emergency systems beeped violently through the structure.
And for one fractured second, Chloe felt something she had not experienced in years.
Disorientation.
Not because she couldn’t see.
Because she suddenly understood something far more dangerous:
This was never just an investigation.
It was surveillance.
Selection.
Observation.
A system studying people before deciding what to do with them.
And somehow—
without realizing when it happened—
she had entered the pattern herself.
The lights returned seconds later.
Harsh white fluorescence flooded the structure again.
But James Dean Luca was gone.
Only silence remained.
And somewhere in that silence, Chloe became aware of something else.
Her own reflection in the dark window of a nearby vehicle.
Still.
Focused.
Obsessed.
For the first time in her career, she saw herself the way a profiler might describe a subject.
Sleep deprivation.
Fixation escalation.
Emotional interference beginning to compromise objectivity.
Dangerously attached to the unknown variable.
Her breathing steadied slowly.
But the truth remained.
This case was changing her.
And the worst part?
A hidden part of her no longer wanted to resist it.
