chapter 3

The old quarry lay four ridges north, carved deep into the flank of the Blackwood Range sometime in the 1920s when men still believed the earth owed them stone. They had blasted and hauled until the pit yawned like an open wound, then abandoned it when the veins ran dry. Now the walls rose sheer and black, streaked with rust from old iron rails. Water pooled at the bottom in a dark mirror that never reflected quite the right sky. Caves honeycombed the northern face—some shallow shelters, others tunnels that twisted deep into the mountain until even echoes gave up. It was perfect for hiding. They reached it at dusk on the third day after the farm raid, Mira's shoulder still bandaged with strips torn from Luka's shirt, the wound closed but angry-red. She walked between them, one arm slung over Luka's shoulders, the other resting lightly on Cassian's sleeve. The snow had stopped, leaving the world brittle and silent. Their footsteps crunched like breaking glass. Luka sniffed the air as they descended the old access road—cracked asphalt swallowed by weeds. "No fresh scents. No wolves. No humans in months." Cassian's eyes scanned the rim above them. "Doesn't mean they haven't been here." Mira said nothing. Her magic felt heavier since the shotgun blast, as if the wound had left a bruise on her power too. Every step sent small sparks skittering across her fingertips, unbidden. They chose the largest cave mouth halfway down the eastern wall. It opened wide enough for three to walk abreast, then narrowed into a throat that widened again into a chamber the size of a small house. Stalactites hung like jagged teeth. A thin stream trickled from a c***k in the far wall, pooling in a shallow basin before vanishing into the stone. The air was cold but still, smelling faintly of wet iron and old dynamite. They made camp in silence. Luka gathered armfuls of dry pine needles and deadfall from the slope outside. Mira coaxed a small, smokeless fire from them—blue-green flames that gave off almost no heat but enough light to see by. Cassian explored the back tunnels, returning with a report: three dead-end passages, one that sloped upward and emerged near the quarry rim, and one that dropped steeply into darkness. "We can use the high one as an escape. The deep one… we don't go there unless we have to." They ate the last of the cheese and potatoes in small bites, saving the bones for broth later. Hunger had become a dull ache they were learning to ignore. That first night in the quarry, they slept in a tight knot near the fire—Mira in the middle, Luka curled protectively on one side, Cassian on the other. None of them dreamed. Exhaustion took them too deep for dreams. Dawn came gray and thin. Luka woke first, as always, nose twitching. Something was different. Not danger—not yet—but change. He slipped outside, moving low and silent, and climbed to the quarry rim. Below, the Blackwood stretched endless and dark. But on the southern ridge—the one they had crossed two days earlier—a thin column of smoke rose. Not camp smoke. Signal smoke. Three deliberate puffs, then nothing. Pack sign. Luka's heart kicked hard. He dropped back into the cave, shaking Mira and Cassian awake. "They're looking," he said. "My pack. Or what's left of it." Mira rubbed sleep from her eyes. "How close?" "Two days, maybe three. They're not rushing. They're being careful." Cassian's expression hardened. "They know we're together. The farmer must have talked." "Or the Elders sent them," Mira said quietly. They sat in the blue-green firelight, considering the weight of that possibility. Luka broke the silence first. "We can't run forever. Sooner or later we'll hit a border—pack land, coven territory, vampire tunnels. They'll all want us dead or claimed." Cassian nodded slowly. "We need to be stronger. All of us." Mira looked at her hands. The sparks still danced there, restless. "My magic's… different since the eclipse. It listens to me sometimes. Other times it wants to burn everything." Luka flexed his fingers. Claws slid out, then retracted smoothly—no pain, no tearing. "Mine too. The shift doesn't fight me anymore." Cassian touched the hollow of his throat. "I'm faster. Hungrier. But I can control it better when I'm near you two." They looked at each other then—really looked. Three children, barely eight years old, carrying the weight of three ancient bloodlines. Three marks on three wrists that had not faded. "We train," Luka said. "Every day. Until we're not afraid of them anymore." They began that morning. Luka taught them to move like wolves: low, silent, reading the wind. He marked trees with claw scratches to teach scent trails, how to tell fear from anger from exhaustion. Mira showed them focus—how to breathe into the magic instead of forcing it. She made small orbs of green light that floated like fireflies, then taught them to dim their own presence so hunters would pass them by. Cassian drilled them in speed and silence: how to cross open ground without sound, how to strike without warning, how to vanish into shadow even when the sun was up. They trained until their muscles screamed and their magic flickered out. They ate whatever Luka could catch—rabbits, squirrels, once a fox that fought like a demon. Cassian took less and less from animals, learning instead to sip just enough to stay sharp without killing. Mira's spells grew steadier; she could now call water from the stream without flooding the cave, or warm the stone floor so they didn't wake frozen. Weeks passed. Winter gave way to a muddy, uncertain spring. The signal smoke never returned, but they never relaxed. One afternoon, while Luka scouted the rim, Mira and Cassian sat by the basin. She was practicing threads of green fire—thin whips that snapped through the air without burning stone. Cassian watched, then asked quietly: "Do you ever think about going back?" Mira's whip faltered, dissolved into sparks. "To the grove? No. They'd burn me before I crossed the first ward." "Not back to them," Cassian said. "Back to… being normal. Pretending none of this happened." Mira looked at him for a long time. "I don't remember what normal felt like." Cassian nodded. "Me neither." Luka returned then, carrying a string of trout. His eyes were bright. "Found something. Up the deep tunnel. A chamber—big. Dry. Old carvings on the walls. Not human." They followed him. The tunnel dropped steeply, then leveled. The air grew warmer, scented with something metallic and old. The passage opened into a cavern twice the size of their camp chamber. The ceiling arched high, lost in shadow. The walls were covered in carvings—spiraling runes, crescent moons, thorned vines, drops that looked like blood frozen in stone. In the center stood a rough altar of black basalt, stained dark at its edges. Mira stepped forward, hand outstretched. The moment her fingers brushed the stone, the carvings glowed—faint emerald, then silver, then crimson. The three colors chased each other around the walls like living light. The mark on their wrists burned in answer. Mira whispered, "This place… it knows us." Cassian traced one of the crescents. "It's old. Older than the quarry. Maybe older than the Covenant." Luka growled low. "We're not alone here." From the deepest shadow at the back of the chamber, something moved. Not a hunter. Not an Elder. A shape stepped into the light—tall, cloaked in tattered black, face hidden in a deep hood. The figure carried no weapon, but power rolled off it in waves, thick and ancient. The voice that came from the hood was dry as old leaves. "I have waited long for the marked ones," it said. "The Triad is no longer a whisper. It walks." Luka shifted halfway, claws out. Mira's hands flared green. Cassian's fangs lengthened. The figure raised one gloved hand. "Peace, children. I am no enemy. Not yet." "Who are you?" Mira demanded. The hood tilted. "Once I was called Keeper. Now… I am only what remains. The last watcher of the Hollow Spire. The one who remembers what the Elders have chosen to forget." Luka snarled. "The Spire is Council ground. Forbidden." "Was," the Keeper corrected. "The Covenant frays. The purebloods grow bold. They hunt you not for sport, but for fear. They know what you will become." Cassian stepped forward. "And what is that?" The Keeper's voice dropped to a rasp. "Unstoppable. Or the end of everything." The carvings flared brighter. The three colors merged into white fire that poured from the walls and settled over the children like mist. For one heartbeat, they saw it: flashes of future violence, of moons stained red, of cities burning, of three figures standing atop a mountain of bones. Then the vision snapped shut. The Keeper bowed once, slowly. "Train harder," it said. "The hunters are closer than you think." It stepped back into shadow and was gone. The children stood in silence, hearts hammering. Outside, far above, another signal smoke rose—closer this time. The quarry was no longer a refuge. It was a crucible.
