The walk from the lookout back to the pack border felt longer than it ever had, as if every inch of forest was trying to hold them there, to stretch the last moments before everything changed. The commotion hit her before she saw it. Voices rose and fell, tinged with the frantic edge of people on the move. At the border, half the pack seemed to have gathered. Trucks and battered SUVs lined the narrow road, hoods up and cargo areas overstuffed with tarps, toolboxes, duffel bags, and boxes. Every face was drawn tight with the expectation of something they couldn’t quite see but felt in the quickness of their own breaths. They were leaving their home, and they knew they would never be returning.
At the center of the spiral, two figures stood upright and commanding. Tate’s parents, Aedan and Deeana, were overseeing the move. Tate’s posture changed as they neared, his grip firm around her fingers until it almost hurt. She glanced sideways, caught the twist in his jaw, the way his gray eyes tracked his parents’ every move. For all his earlier bravado, there was a part of him that was still just a son, and he would be parted from his parents. A choice he made on his own, but still a painful one. Once Elysia was sealed, he might never see them again.
Someone raced past Tate, clapping his back as he moved in front of him. It was Johnny, Tate’s gamma, his face red from the move. “We’re loaded up. Just waiting on the last truck,” he reported, nodding deferentially to Tate, then to Raven. He rubbed the back of his neck and sighed. “I don’t do goodbyes, so I’m going to pretend this isn’t one. I feel like I’m abandoning you—”
“Johnny, we’ve talked about this. You do what’s right for you and your family. We all know what staying means … a hard life and loss. I have accepted needing to replace all of my officers.” Tate gave him a smile and nodded his head. This was hard. He was losing his family and his best friends, but he couldn’t rationalize leaving. He was losing his gamma Johnny, son of Kurt, and Rick, Jamie’s son, who was his delta. Friends he’d grown up with and trusted with his life. It would be hard to replace them.
Sullivan, Johnny’s brother, was still around, but he planned to make the move as well. He didn’t know who he would get to replace his officers. Maybe during a time of war, they wouldn’t be filled.
Johnny suddenly stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Tate. “If my parents wouldn’t have cried and begged me to come—”
“I know. Johnny, it’s going to be okay. Tell Rick hello for me. And make Elysia interesting.” Tate squeezed his friend one last time before looking at Raven.
"Raven ..." Johnny's voice cracked, his eyes suddenly swimming with tears he refused to let fall. "Take care of him for me." He squeezed her arm once before swiftly jogging away, his shoulders hunched against the weight of everything unsaid. She caught the way his hand rose to his face as he turned, wiping furiously at his cheeks.
“Son.” Aedan was walking up to them now. His gaze was on Tate’s as he studied him. “Are you sure? There’s still time. We have another evacuation planned for when we return, and—”
“I’m sure, Dad. This is what Raven and I both want. We want to protect the world so that maybe you can all return to it.”
Aedan’s lips twitched. “There are a few more who will make the final trip with us, but those who remain are under your leadership. You are their alpha … their prince.”
Tate bowed his head, then lifted it, shoulders square. “I won’t let you down, Dad.”
“You never have,” Deeana said, stepping in. She pulled Tate into a tight, fast hug, then released him before he could react. Raven was next, her turn in Deeana’s arms a little longer, the grip almost bruising. Deeana’s breath was cool against her ear. “Watch over my son,” she whispered, then stepped back, eyes bright. “We’ll be back soon. This isn’t goodbye yet.”
Aedan reached out and caught both Tate and Raven by the forearms, his touch oddly gentle for such a formidable man. “Remember who you are,” he said. “Not what others expect. Just … you.” He looked pointedly at Raven when he said it, and she nodded, feeling the words had a double meaning for her.
Raven felt a tug at her elbow. She turned, expecting Gavin, but found her mother instead. Briar’s blue eyes were sharp with worry, her smile paper-thin. Behind her, Seon stood tall and watchful, but his aura radiated unease. Raven could almost see the way he pressed his thumb into his palm, the gesture he used to ground himself when his mind threatened to drift too far.
“Come with us,” Briar said, tugging her away from the main throng. They walked a few paces into the brush, where the noise dimmed to a low murmur and the light fractured through the boughs. Seon followed, silent until they were out of earshot.
He was the first to speak. “You feel it too, don’t you?” His eyes, already darker than night, flashed jackal-gold for an instant. “The world … it’s restless.”
Raven’s skin prickled. “I feel something,” she admitted. “Like the air’s too heavy.”
Briar put a hand on her arm, thumb rubbing gentle circles. “We have to move quickly. There’s been news of ripples. Incursions in the southern quadrant. Elysia is reporting increased activity. It isn’t just talk anymore.”
“War is coming, now,” Raven said. It wasn’t a question.
Seon’s face fell. For a moment, he was just her father, not a god or a leader. “It’s coming, and sooner than any of us planned,” he said. “We need to get the families safe. We need you to be ready to leave for Genesis at a moment’s notice. You’ll be safer there. I’m afraid you have to leave Black Ice.”
Raven’s fists clenched, more out of frustration than fear. “We can’t just hide,” she said. “Not all of us are meant to run.”
Briar’s touch tightened. “No one is asking you to run.” Her voice was pitched low. “But sometimes the bravest thing is to survive. To wait for the right moment, then strike.” Her gaze flicked to Tate, who stood rigid and solitary at the edge of the clearing. “He’ll need you. So will the others.”
Seon nodded, chin tucked as if the words cost him something. “You may need to hold the mating ceremony in Genesis. It’s not ideal, but—”
“Ceremony doesn’t matter,” Raven interrupted. “He’s already mine.”
Briar smiled, relief flickering in her eyes. “Good. Then you won’t hesitate when the time comes.” She pulled Raven in for a hug, holding her so tightly that Raven could feel her heartbeat, fast and worried, against her own chest.
Seon waited until Briar let go, then pulled Raven into his arms, one hand splayed between her shoulder blades. “You know that once the war starts … I can’t do anything. I’m handcuffed, and I can’t interfere.”
“Daddy, I know. No matter what happens … it’ll be okay.”
Seon pulled his daughter to his chest, wrapping his arms around her in a tight hug. “I’ll be back in two days,” he murmured, his breath ruffling her hair. “I promise you.”
She let herself rest in his embrace, drawing strength from the solidness of him, the sense that some things could never break.
When they stepped apart, her parents gave her a brave smile. They weren’t moving to Elysia but would be going to the spirit realm. They were just making a fast trip to Elysia. So why did this feel like a farewell? It wasn’t, but it was still an ending. She would no longer live with her parents.
“Believe in yourself, and remember … you’re stronger than you think.” Briar interlaced her fingers with Seon as they walked away. They were leading out the first group of the evacuation.
She watched her parents leave before she returned to Tate, who waited by the stone marker, hands shoved deep in his pockets. In the distance, the engines of the convoy rumbled to life, and the thick, sour smell of diesel wafted in the air. People began to pile into vehicles, shouting goodbyes, hoisting last-minute bags. The line of cars stretched into the trees, headlights blinking in the gathering fog.
The pack’s absence pressed in like a vacuum, every sound amplified by the empty space it left behind. Raven stood at the border, her hand caught in Tate’s, staring into the hush where the convoy had vanished. The hush didn’t last.
Raised voices shattered it. A crackling argument, not even trying for secrecy, echoing from the trees just up the hill. Raven turned, Tate already in motion beside her, and together they could see the culprits.
“You’re not listening to me!” Gavin’s voice, ragged, ricocheted through the half-lit clearing. “I’m not a kid. I get to decide.”
Deeana’s silhouette was razor-sharp against the evening sky, posture stiff as she reached for him. “This isn’t about being a child or not, Gavin. It’s about the future of this pack … of our kind.” She flicked a glance at Aedan, who stood silent, arms folded across his chest, watching the scene unfold with a thundercloud expression.
Gavin planted himself in front of both of them, fists balled at his sides, jaw set in anger. “You’re trying to split us up. That’s what this is.”
Deeana’s pale hair shivered in the wind, but her voice stayed ice-cold. “We need the heirs not to be together. If anything happens—”
“Stop,” Gavin cut her off. His green eyes flashed, wild. “You think you can keep me safe by locking me away? You can’t. I want to be here, with my brother.”
Aedan finally stepped in, voice low and deliberate. “You are our son, Gavin. We want you alive.”
“That’s not your call,” Gavin shot back. “It’s mine. You’re already condemning those who stay to death, aren’t you?!”
For a heartbeat, no one moved. The air between them sizzled with all the things they couldn’t say. Deeana’s hands trembled, only the faintest shudder, but Raven saw it and felt her own heart break a little for the woman who had spent her whole life keeping this family stitched together.
“I have hope, but I’m not a fool. I know what will happen in this war. Why do you think Elysia is being sealed? You two are the lycan princes. If you both stay—” Aedan sighed. “We’ll discuss this later.” The finality in his tone was unyielding. “When we return, we’ll talk about it.”
Deeana turned away first, her back straight but her shoulders slumped as she walked toward the line of vehicles in the distance. Aedan followed, slower, pausing to glance over his shoulder. His gaze caught Tate, then Raven, then Gavin. He nodded once, nothing more needing to be said.
As the Alpha pair headed for their own car, Gavin slumped against the nearest tree, punching the bark with enough force to flake off moss. He didn’t yell, just stood there, head down, shoulders shaking.
Raven crossed the distance in three strides and wrapped her arms around him from behind. He stiffened, then melted, letting his head fall back onto her shoulder.
“You okay?” she murmured, knowing it was a dumb question.
He snorted, the sound half-sob, half-laugh. “Not even close.”
Tate approached, silent until he was right beside them. “You’re staying?” he asked, voice so raw it barely carried.
Gavin opened his eyes, meeting his brother’s stare. For a second, everything else fell away … their parents, the pack, the war. It was just the two of them, bonded by something that didn’t need words.
“Wouldn’t be anywhere else,” Gavin said, softer this time. “Someone’s got to keep you from losing your mind.”
Tate smiled. “You’re a pain in the ass.”
“Yeah,” Gavin agreed, wiping at his face with the back of his hand. “But I’m your pain in the ass.”
Raven let them have a moment, stepping back to watch Aedan and Deeana’s vehicle disappear in the tree line. They could only take the vehicles part way, and then they would all have to travel on foot. It would be a rough move with all the families.
Tate exhaled, the sound long and shaky. “Guess this is it,” he said.
Raven reached for his hand, finding it cold and stiff. “We’ll be okay.”
Gavin straightened, the spark back in his eyes. “Damn right we will. Someone’s got to keep the home fires burning, right?”
Raven grinned, and for a moment, she could pretend that everything was normal.
Tate didn’t speak for a long time. He just watched, every muscle in his body drawn tight, eyes tracking where his pack and parents had vanished. Most he would never see again.
Raven caught the flicker of loss on his face, the way his mouth set in a harder line, as if he could keep the rest of the world from shifting beneath him if he only stood still enough.
“We just lost half the pack right there,” Tate said finally, his voice the barest scrape.
Gavin kicked at the dirt with his boot, head lowered. “Makes the war feel even more real now, doesn’t it?”
Raven glanced between them, unsure what to say. They all grew up knowing about the war that was coming. But now it wasn’t a story … it was real.
Tate turned to Gavin, eyes searching. “Why didn’t you go?” The question was soft, but there was something in it, a pleading edge, the echo of an older brother who wanted to understand.
Gavin’s jaw clenched, but when he looked up, his eyes were clear. “I didn’t want to be sealed in the fairy kingdom. I wanted to stay with you.” He paused, glancing at Raven, then back at Tate. “With both of you.”
“You’re an i***t,” Tate said, but the words came out warm. “If things go sideways, you could—”
“I’ll take my chances with the home team,” Gavin cut him off, a half-smile pulling at his lips. “Besides, who else is going to keep your ego in check?”
Tate smiled widely, “Guess I won’t have to pick another beta, then.”
Gavin’s grin widened. “Hell no you won’t. You’re stuck with me.”
Raven felt a sudden, fierce pride in both of them. For all their stubbornness, their bickering, the weight of destiny, they were here, together, choosing loyalty over safety, each other over certainty.
Together, they would face whatever darkness clawed at their borders, whatever nightmares stalked through the trees. They had to. The alternative was unthinkable.
