The cold night air hit Alina like a slap in the face, but she barely felt it. Nothing could hurt worse than the pain crushing her chest right now. She gripped the balcony railing of her penthouse apartment, staring out at Jakarta's sparkling lights below.
This was supposed to be mine forever.
But tomorrow? Tomorrow she'd have to leave it all behind.
Cardboard boxes were scattered across the marble floor that used to shine like a mirror. Each box represented another piece of her perfect life being torn away. She used to stand right here, taking i********: photos that made her hundreds of thousands of followers go crazy with envy. Designer bags, expensive shoes, this incredible view as her backdrop—it had all felt like living in a fairy tale.
Now it was her personal nightmare.
"Alina, sweetheart..."
Her mother's broken voice cut through the silence. The woman who used to look like she stepped out of a magazine now looked... destroyed. Her usually perfect hair hung limp around her face, and her eyes were red and puffy from crying.
"We need to pack the last few things," her mom said, her voice shaking.
Alina turned around, and her heart sank even deeper. This wasn't the strong, elegant mother she'd always known. This was a woman who'd lost everything, just like her.
"Just give me a few more minutes, Mom." Alina's voice came out rougher than she wanted. "I just... I need more time."
Her mother walked over and pulled her into a gentle hug. "I know this is killing you, baby. But we have to stay strong. Your father would want us to—"
"Don't." The word came out sharp. "Don't talk about Dad right now."
But it was too late. Just hearing about him made her walls crumble completely. The man she'd been so proud to call her father—the successful businessman who gave her everything she ever wanted—was now sitting in a prison cell. The corruption scandal had destroyed his company and turned their family name into a joke.
The media couldn't get enough of their downfall.
---
Three months ago...
"Alina Maharani, daughter of Maharani Group's CEO, is now caught in the middle of a 500 billion rupiah corruption scandal..."
Those words were burned into Alina's memory. She'd been sitting on their ridiculously expensive Italian leather couch, watching her entire world collapse on live television. Her father, handcuffed and being led away by police. The photos were everywhere—newspapers, TV, social media.
"Daddy..." she'd whispered, still refusing to believe it. "This has to be a mistake. There's no way Daddy would—"
But reality didn't care what she believed. Within days, everything was frozen. Her bank accounts that used to hold millions suddenly showed zero. Her credit cards got declined at her favorite stores. And the worst part? All her so-called friends disappeared like smoke.
"Sorry Lin, I'm super busy right now..."
"Oh, I have this family emergency..."
"Maybe we can hang out later, sometime..."
One by one, their excuses got more obvious. More fake. Until finally, her phone that used to never stop ringing went completely silent.
The final blow came when Carla—her best friend since high school—sent her a text instead of picking up her call: "Lin, it's better if we don't talk for a while. My family is worried about our business reputation."
Reputation. That word cut deeper than any knife ever could.
---
"Why did this happen to us, Mom?" Alina's voice was barely a whisper now.
Her mother rubbed her back softly. "Life doesn't always go the way we plan, sweetheart. What matters now is how we bounce back."
Bounce back. Easy words to say. Not so easy to actually do when your entire world just got destroyed.
"I really thought my friends cared about me," Alina said, staring out at the dark city. "Turns out they only loved my money, not me."
"Now you know who really matters," her mother said quietly. "Sometimes we have to lose everything to see what's actually important."
Alina went quiet. She thought back to her college days when she felt like she owned the world. Beautiful, rich, popular—like nothing could ever touch her. She remembered how she used to treat people she thought were "beneath" her. Arrogant, mean, never caring about anyone else's feelings.
Especially Leon.
His face suddenly popped into her head—that nerdy guy with thick glasses who everyone made fun of. She remembered that day when he'd worked up the courage to confess his feelings in front of the whole class. His face was red, his voice was shaking, and he looked so hopeful.
And she'd completely destroyed him.
She'd said the cruelest things she could think of, just to look cool in front of her friends. She watched his face go from hopeful to crushed, saw the hurt in his eyes. But back then, she didn't care. All that mattered was keeping her reputation as the untouchable queen bee.
Now, years later, she realized how horrible she'd been.
"Mom, I hurt someone really badly in college," Alina said suddenly.
Her mother looked at her with confusion. "What do you mean?"
"There was this guy who told me he liked me. And I... I rejected him in the worst possible way. In front of everyone." Alina bit her lip. "I never said sorry."
"Why are you thinking about this now?"
Alina shrugged. "Maybe because now I know what it feels like to be treated like trash. It really hurts."
Her mother hugged her tighter. "If you feel bad about it, maybe someday you can apologize to him."
"He's probably forgotten all about some spoiled brat like me."
"People don't forget kindness, but they definitely don't forget cruelty either, honey. All we can do is hope we get a chance to make things right."
Alina nodded, though she doubted she'd ever see Leon again. The world was huge, and what were the chances they'd ever cross paths again?
She grabbed her phone—one of the last expensive things she still had. Opening up the job search app she'd downloaded last week. The listings stared back at her: Sales Girl, Waitress, Customer Service, Office Assistant...
All of them wanted experience. All of them required skills she didn't have.
What can Alina Maharani actually do? Shop? Put on makeup? Go to parties? Take selfies?
Tears started forming in her eyes. She remembered how she used to look down on people who worked these jobs.
"How can you be a waitress? That must be so tiring, serving people all day."
"Office work is so easy—just sitting at a computer, right?"
"Sales work? Well, if that's all you can do..."
God, she'd been such a snob. She had no idea how hard it was to actually earn money.
Now she was the one applying for these jobs. And even then, she kept getting rejected.
"Sorry, you don't have enough work experience."
"We're looking for someone more... humble."
"Your background is too... different from what we need."
Humble. That word kept haunting her. Once upon a time, humble was the last thing she'd ever been.
Alina walked to the small mirror on the wall. The person staring back looked completely different. Her skin that used to glow from expensive treatments now looked dull. Her hair that was always perfectly styled now hung flat and lifeless. Her eyes that used to sparkle with confidence now looked tired and empty.
"Who are you really, Alina?" she whispered to her reflection. "Without daddy's money, without the status, without all the luxury... who are you?"
The question hung in the air like a heavy cloud.
She remembered her father's last words before they took him away: "Lin, daddy's so sorry. I've ruined your future. But remember, life isn't about what we have—it's about who we really are."
At the time, she didn't get it. She was too angry, too devastated, too focused on everything she was losing.
Who we really are.
Alina wiped away the tears that had started falling. Her hands were shaking, but something was changing inside her chest. It wasn't just sadness or regret anymore—it was something harder. Something that burned.
Anger. At the situation. At her past. At herself.
But it was a different kind of anger. The kind that made you want to fight back, not give up.
She grabbed her phone again, this time with more determination. Opening the job app once more. This time, she wouldn't be picky. She started sending her resume to every single opening that didn't require tons of experience.
Junior office assistant. Send.
Customer service. Send.
Receptionist. Send.
One by one, she applied. Her fingers wouldn't stop moving, like each click was a small fight against the despair trying to swallow her whole.
Then her eyes stopped on one listing that made her pause.
"Executive Assistant position at TechNova Corp."
TechNova Corp. She knew that name—one of Southeast Asia's hottest tech companies. The CEO was young, mysterious, and barely ever showed up in the media.
Alina shook her head. She had zero experience as an executive assistant. But something—maybe desperation, maybe gut instinct—made her hit the apply button anyway.
After sending her resume, she stared at her phone's dark screen. Outside, Jakarta kept buzzing with its never-ending energy. Inside, Alina felt like she was standing at the edge of a cliff.
She had no idea that this one small decision—applying to TechNova Corp—would lead her to someone from her past. Someone she'd forgotten about. Someone who still carried the wounds she'd created years ago.
Someone who now had the power to either destroy her completely or save her.
But that night, Alina only knew one thing: she had to rise up. No matter how far she'd fallen, no matter how much it hurt, she would rise up.
"I'm going to prove it," she whispered to the mirror, her voice stronger now. "I'm going to prove that I'm more than just a spoiled rich girl who knows nothing."
The last tear fell, then stopped. What was left was pure determination—hard, sharp, and unbreakable.
Fate was getting ready to test her. And Alina had just taken her first step into a maze from her past that would change everything.
---
Somewhere else in Jakarta, behind the huge windows of a luxury penthouse, a young man stood holding a glass of wine. His face was handsome and determined, with dark eyes that held secrets. He was looking out at the same city as Alina, but from a very different place.
James Leonhart—TechNova Corp's youngest CEO—raised his wine glass like he was making a toast to the silent night.
"Finally," he whispered with a thin smile that held a thousand meanings, "it's time for the game to begin."
The night wind blew, carrying the scent of coming rain. And without knowing it, two hearts that had been wounded by the past were about to meet again in a completely different game.
A game where Alina no longer held all the winning cards.
