Alina stared at herself in the executive bathroom mirror, smoothing down her gray blazer for what felt like the hundredth time. Her hands were shaking—not from being sick, but from pure nerves. Today was *the* day. The day she'd finally meet James Leonhart, the mysterious CEO who'd literally changed her entire life overnight.
Come on, Alina. You've got this, she told herself, practicing her smile in the mirror. Just introduce yourself, be professional, and don't mess this up.
She'd stayed up all night rehearsing what she'd say. Her background, her education, how excited she was to work at TechNova Corp—all of it perfectly planned out.
When she got back to her desk, Sandra from Marketing walked over with a steaming cup of coffee and that warm smile she was getting used to.
"Big day, huh?" Sandra said, handing her the coffee. "You look like you're about to throw up."
"Is it that obvious?" Alina laughed nervously, accepting the coffee like it was a lifeline. "I just... this meeting with Mr. James could make or break everything for me here."
"Hey, relax." Sandra gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "James can be pretty intimidating at first, but he respects people who are genuine. Just be yourself."
Be yourself. If only Sandra knew how complicated that was when half her life felt like one big lie these days.
"Oh, heads up," Sandra added, checking her watch. "Meeting starts in ten minutes. Conference room A, twenty-sixth floor. Take the executive elevator at the end of the hall."
Alina nodded, taking a deep breath. "Thanks, Sandra. Wish me luck."
"You don't need it. You'll be fine."
The executive elevator was like stepping into a different world—all glass and gold trim with soft music playing. When it opened on the twenty-sixth floor, Alina's jaw nearly dropped. This wasn't just an office floor; it was like something out of a luxury hotel. Black marble floors, rich wood paneling, and lighting that made everything look expensive and important.
Conference room A was at the end of the hall, and through the frosted glass doors, she could see blurry shapes of people already inside.
"Alina!" Melissa appeared out of nowhere, looking a bit frazzled. "Perfect timing. Let's go in—Mr. James should be here any minute."
The conference room was absolutely stunning. A massive wooden table that could seat twenty people, plush leather chairs that probably cost more than Alina's monthly rent, and floor-to-ceiling windows with an incredible view of Jakarta. There was even a coffee station in the corner that looked like it belonged in a five-star hotel.
"Pretty impressive, right?" David from Finance whispered as she sat down. "James designed this room himself. Says good environments lead to good decisions."
Alina took the seat Melissa pointed to—third from the head of the table, right where she'd have a perfect view of the CEO. Around fifteen people were already there, all looking polished and confident in a way that made her feel like a fraud.
"Nervous?" asked Maya, a Senior Analyst sitting next to her. "First meetings with Mr. James are always... memorable. He has this presence, you know?"
"What kind of presence?" Alina asked, curious despite her nerves.
Maya smiled mysteriously. "You'll see."
Suddenly, the room went quiet. Footsteps echoed from the hallway—confident, purposeful steps that seemed to command respect before their owner even appeared. Everyone straightened up automatically, switching into their most professional mode.
"He's coming," Melissa whispered, adjusting her papers.
Alina sat up straighter, put on her best professional smile, and took a deep breath. This was it. The moment that would determine her entire future at TechNova Corp.
The conference room door opened.
A man walked in, and the entire room seemed to shift around him. He was tall—maybe six feet—with perfect posture and a black suit that fit him like it was custom-made. Crisp white shirt, dark tie, expensive shoes. His black hair was styled perfectly, not a strand out of place, nothing like the messy...
The messy...
Alina's heart stopped.
He looked up, and their eyes met. Dark brown eyes that she knew. Eyes that used to hide behind thick glasses, eyes that used to look at her with such gentle hope. Now they were sharp, cold, calculating. His face—the nose that used to seem too big was now perfectly proportioned. The awkward features had transformed into something devastatingly handsome.
Leon.
Oh my God. Leon.
The boy she'd humiliated in front of everyone. The boy who'd confessed his feelings only to have her crush him publicly. The boy she'd mocked for being a nerd, for being awkward, for not being good enough.
Now he was standing in front of her as James Leonhart—the most successful young CEO in Indonesia.
Alina felt like the world was crashing down around her.
She nearly choked on her water. Her heart was pounding so hard she was sure everyone could hear it. Her hands went clammy, and she felt dizzy, like all the blood had drained from her body.
This can't be happening, she thought desperately. This is impossible.
James—Leon—whoever he was now, walked confidently to the head of the table. Gone was every trace of the awkward, uncertain boy she remembered. His movements were smooth, authoritative, commanding. He set down his tablet and coffee with precise movements, then scanned the room with eyes that missed nothing.
"Good morning, everyone." His voice was deep, clear, powerful. Not the nervous, stuttering voice she remembered. "Thank you for joining today's monthly executive meeting."
His gaze moved from person to person, acknowledging each with the same professional courtesy. When his eyes reached Alina...
Nothing.
No recognition. No surprise. No shock like what was currently destroying her from the inside. He looked at her exactly the same way he looked at everyone else—with cold, impersonal professionalism.
Like she was a complete stranger.
"I see we have a new face today," James said, his eyes settling on her with that same flat stare. "Ms. Alina Sari, our new Executive Assistant. Would you like to introduce yourself to the team?"
His voice when he said her name was completely neutral. No warmth, no hint that they'd ever known each other. Nothing.
Alina opened her mouth, but no words came out. Her brain was still trying to process this impossible situation. Leon—the boy whose life she'd made miserable—was now sitting in front of her as this powerful, gorgeous CEO.
Gorgeous. God, when had Leon become so attractive? His face was all sharp angles and masculine features now. His body had filled out, gone from skinny and hunched to tall and athletic. The confidence radiating from him was magnetic.
"Ms. Alina?" James repeated, his tone getting slightly impatient. One eyebrow raised. "We're waiting."
The formal way he said her name snapped her back to reality. She cleared her throat, trying to find her voice.
"I... sorry," she stammered, her voice shaky. "I'm Alina Sari. I'm really excited to join TechNova Corp as Executive Assistant. I just graduated with a Business Management degree, and I'm committed to giving my absolute best to this company."
It came out choppy and awkward—nothing like the smooth introduction she'd practiced. She could see a few people exchange glances, probably wondering what was wrong with her.
James nodded once—minimal, dismissive. "Welcome to TechNova Corp, Ms. Alina. I trust you'll meet our standards."
The way he emphasized 'standards' felt like a slap. There was something underneath his words, something that sounded almost like a challenge. Or a threat.
"Now," James smoothly shifted his attention away from her, like she'd already stopped being relevant, "let's move on to today's agenda."
The rest of the meeting was torture. Alina sat frozen in her chair, trying to look professional while her mind spiraled out of control. She watched James lead the discussion with brilliant authority, covering quarterly reports and strategic planning with an expertise that was genuinely impressive.
Every now and then, she'd steal glances at him, hoping to catch some sign of recognition. But all she got was that perfect professional mask. He treated everyone the same—courteous, efficient, completely impersonal.
When James laughed softly at one of David's jokes, the sound made Alina's chest ache. It was still the same laugh—though more confident now—that she used to hear when Leon was nervous or trying to fit in.
"Alina?" Maya nudged her gently. "Meeting's over."
Alina blinked, realizing she'd been staring at James as he stood up and shook hands with the department heads. People were getting up, chatting casually as they filed out.
James gathered his things efficiently. As he turned to leave, their eyes met one more time—just for a second. For a moment, Alina's heart jumped, thinking maybe...
But James just gave her the same professional nod he'd given everyone else and walked out without another word.
Alina sat alone in the empty conference room, staring at the closed door. Her hands were shaking as she tried to pick up her water glass. Her chest felt tight, and for the first time in months, she wanted to cry.
"Alina, you okay?" Sandra sat down next to her, looking concerned. "You look really pale."
"I'm fine," Alina whispered. "Just nervous about meeting Mr. James for the first time."
"That's understandable. James can be pretty intimidating. But you did fine for a first meeting. It's always awkward."
Awkward. That was definitely one word for it.
"Sandra," Alina said quietly, "what's Mr. James like? Outside of work, I mean."
Sandra paused, thinking. "Honestly? Nobody really knows. He's incredibly private. Never comes to company parties, never makes small talk, not even with the senior executives. It's all business with him."
"Has he ever mentioned his past? Before he started TechNova?"
"Not really. We know he's self-made, brilliant, visionary. But his personal life? Complete mystery." Sandra looked at her curiously. "Why? Something seem off to you?"
Alina shook her head quickly. "No, just curious."
But after Sandra left and Alina returned to her desk on the twenty-fifth floor, those questions kept spinning in her head. Why didn't Leon—James—show any recognition? Did he really not remember her? Or was this all some incredibly sophisticated act?
And the most terrifying question: was her getting this job at TechNova Corp really a coincidence?
Or was this all part of some bigger plan?
Alina looked up toward the upper floors where James's office was. She could see light behind the closed blinds. He was up there working, just meters above her, but it felt like they were separated by an entire universe.
"Leon," she whispered his name so softly she could barely hear herself. "What happened to you? What are you doing to me?"
But the only answer was the cold silence of the office building and the growing anxiety eating her alive.
Her first day of facing her past had ended with more questions than answers. And deep down, she knew this was just the beginning of something far more complicated and painful than she could ever imagine.
---
That night, after everyone had gone home and the office building was silent, James stood at his office window looking out at Jakarta's city lights. In his hand was a glass of red wine that he hadn't touched.
"Welcome back, Alina," he whispered into the darkness. His voice had lost all that professional control from the morning. Now it was raw, full of emotions he'd been hiding for years.
"Now let's see how well you handle the game I've been planning for you."
