Chapter 7

CARSON I watched as Jenny left the office. The scent on her was sweet, but it made my wolf, Lynx, go crazy. I smelt it before, but I couldn't place where. Lynx wanted to take over for some reason, but he wouldn't tell me why. "What's your deal?" I asked him while looking back at him. "Nothing," he huffed and sat back in my head with a flop. I couldn't deal with him like this; he was too much of a drama queen. I looked back at Julian, who was staring at me. I knew Jenny was showing raw emotion, and everything she was going through was clearly written all over her face. "Julian, how is Jenny really? And tell me more about her daughter?" I was concerned about having a human brought into the pack. We have some humans, but they were mated to wolves in the pack. Nothing like this has ever happened in our pack before. This situation was different and weird for me. Lucian looked at me, but his face dropped. "I have to be honest with you, alpha, her daughter was harsh on her. I know what my sister went through; we watched her every day tear herself apart till she broke down and spilled to us about her secret family." I hated that part more. I knew Jenny was with a human when she met Josh; he was a good friend of my father's, but when she left without a word. He went nuts and looked for her everywhere. I looked at Lucian as he continued. "Alpha, Leah didn't want to come here. I was shocked when my sister told me and that’s why I wanted to help her with the judge you mentioned, and he did sign the documents we needed. But hearing how her daughter spoke to her was hard to listen to." "What do you expect?" Zain, my Beta, gritted out, sounding more pissed. "Jenny abandoned her." Lucian growled, but I let my Alpha aura slip through, making both men submit to me. "Enough!” I stared at Julian. I have to admit, Zain was right. Surely, there was a better way for Jenny to deal with the whole thing. I cleared my throat. "What about your parents? Are they okay with the whole thing now?" Her parents were furious when Jenny had her mental break and then told them what it was all over. Lucian stared at me but let out a long sigh. "I spoke to my mum sounded she was coming around but didn't know what to make of the situation. My father is another story; he is pissed and wants answers. He is from the older generation, where they believe in mates over anything." I stared at him. Knowing Jenny and Julian's parents are old school and retired, they are well respected around the pack. And when I took over, they were hard to win over as I was young when I took over the pack, and I didn't have my Luna. Hell, I still don't have her, but I know she's out there somewhere. I'm an alpha first, but I want to find my mate when the time comes. I looked at Lucian and sighed. "I have a funny feeling this will blow up in my face," I said with a frown. "Why would she want her daughter to come here? Knowing how she feels about her and with her parents like they are." Lucian looked at me for a moment but shrugged. "I guess, alpha, she wants a second chance with her," he said and sighed. "I remember meeting Larry once, and she was so in love with him, it was revolting. But something about him made my sister and her wolf at ease. I never questioned it, not even for a second. But I think Jenny wants to redeem herself, not only for herself but for Leah too." That makes more sense. Every generation has a different structure. My father and mum were the same age as Jenny and mated to one another before they had me and my sister, Cassie. "Okay," I said, leaning back in my seat. "I will let you leave, but please inform me when Jenny will collect her daughter." Lucian nodded and left the office, leaving Zain and me to the quiet of the office. As soon as Lucian was out the door, Zain walked over to the chair in front of my desk and sighed while taking the seat. "I don't know what's worse, a human coming here, or her childhood was a lie. How the hell is she going to process werewolves let alone deal with her mother, who she clearly hates?" That's a point. Her daughter didn't want anything to do with her, so how would she tell her daughter about us? I had to let it go, but something was triggering something within me, but I didn't know what. I shook my head and looked at Zain, but he beat me to it. "Are you okay?" he asked with a concerned look. I shrugged. "I am. But I don't know; something is up. I can't seem to let go about what happened to Jenny's daughter." Zain nodded. "I know what you mean. But it might be triggering things about your dad. I mean, she did lose hers around the same age as you did." I stared at him; that could be it. My Dad died in a rogue attack, leaving my mum, me, and Cassie behind. I was only seventeen, the same age as Leah is now. Cassie and I were fine, and I took on the Alpha role shortly after. Josh helped me get it all together and even helped me with some of the paperwork. He was a godsend. My mum was another story; she lost her mate and ultimately went into herself. Resulting in her not acknowledging us or anyone around here. Ever since then, Cassie and I have food with her every evening. She often stays in her room and rarely comes out to see pack members. I glanced at the clock and realized I needed to leave to have food with them. "Well, we best leave, I have a date with Mum and Cassie.” Zain nodded. "How is your mum today?" he asked with concern. He loves my mum just as much as I do. Worry set deep within me. Mum has been in bed for the last three days and won't get up. I promised her that I would be there every night till she moved. She has had food but has yet to speak to anyone. I have a woman who watches over her during the day, as it's not fair to Cassie to watch her all the time. I sigh. "She's okay, but still not talking or moving from bed. Cassie seems to think that she needs some time. It was my father's anniversary the other day." Zain nodded, but he looked at me and c****d his brow up, which made me frown. "What?" I asked as I moved from my chair and walked around the desk. The paperwork can stay there; I can do the rest tomorrow. Zain smirked. "You need to get laid.” I grunt. Not this again. I'm not too fond of it when he says it like that. Hell, I'm not looking for fun or anything; that is far from my mind. I have had some girls, but none have done anything for me. I haven't been with the she-wolves in this pack as it would cause problems, but they have tried. I can name a few that have been attempting, but I have managed to stay away. When I went to Alpha meetings or on business, I always had one-night stands with humans. I shook my head to Zain. "Not interested," I said, walking away and heading to the door. I opened my office door and looked back at Zain, who was now getting up from the chair. He looked at me. "Come on, dude. You need to have some fun. You are always serious." "I'm the alpha," I grunted out while rolling my eyes at him. "It's a twenty-four-hour job, and you know it." Zain looked at me and sighed. "You're right, but you do need to let go now and again, or you will go stir-crazy." I didn't say anything as we both headed out of the office. I pulled the door shut and locked it. I looked toward Zain and smirked. "What are you up to then?" I asked, even though I had some idea of what he might be up to. Zain laughed. "Well, if you must know, a little she-wolf wants to have some food with me," he said, wiggling his eyebrows up and down at me. "We see what happens." I nodded, but I knew where that date was leading, and that would be someone's room to have the fun he asked me to get. I said nothing while I tried to get out of my head. Lynx had calmed down since Jenny had left the office, but I knew there was something he wasn’t telling me. I could feel him moving back further into my head to settle, which is what I was hoping he was doing. Zain and I said our goodbyes as I climbed the stairs. My mum was staying on the top floor of the pack house, which is the sixth floor to be exact. It was where she and my father lived when they ruled the pack. It has a little apartment that had everything in it. I didn’t want to move her anywhere else, but thinking back, I don’t think my mother would want to move from the place her and my father have made a home for themselves. Reaching the top floor, I glanced around and walked to the door. But I stopped and noticed that it smelled lovely. The cleaner must have been up here earlier, spraying something nice to make it better for my mother. Not wanting to wait any longer, I knocked on the door to let them know it was me and walked inside. Once inside, I looked around till I found my mum and sister sitting on the couch with the TV on, watching a film. I closed the door behind me as quietly as I could and walked over to them. My mum looked over her shoulder and gave me a small smile. "Hi, Mum, what's for dinner?" Mun smiled. "Beef lasagna. Your favourite." The corners of my lips curled up at her voice. It was good to heat her again. She has these moments where she’s our mum, but then there are the bad ones that make it all worse and concerning of Cassie and me. My stomach growled at the mention of my favourite dish, making my mum chuckle slightly. The right there I have missed so much over the last few years. I love hearing that chuckle. I guess we take what we can and other things for granted at times, but not this evening. My mother seemed to be in a good mood and that was something I was going to cherish for now. I moved from the doorway and headed over to the chair to sit near her. There was the only thing I needed right now and that was to be with my mum; she needed us, but we needed her too.
