VOID PROTOCOL Volume 1 — What Is Lost Never Truly Leaves CHAPTER 1:The Man Who Didn't Believe in Things He Couldn't Measure Raiden Arkana woke at four in the morning. Not because of an alarm. He hadn't used one in years. His body had learned long ago that sleep beyond five hours was a luxury he refused to grant himself — not because he was opposed to comfort, but because every hour he spent unconscious was an hour the world spent moving without him. And Raiden Arkana did not like things moving without him. He sat at the edge of the bed — custom-ordered, twice the standard size, because one of the few indulgences he permitted himself was sleeping without ever touching a mattress edge — and allowed his eyes exactly three seconds to adjust to the dark. The brain, like any operating system, required a boot cycle. Three seconds was the figure he'd calculated as sufficient without being wasteful. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the sixtieth-floor penthouse, Surabaya was still black and amber — city lights that never fully died, vehicles threading through arteries too narrow for the volume they carried. From up here, from this height, the people below looked like variables inside a system too complex to care about any one of them individually. Raiden liked that view. He crossed to his desk — three steps, no more were needed — and touched the main screen. The monitors came alive without sound, displaying the dashboard he'd designed himself: real-time equity indices, server performance across Arkana Corp's seventeen regional offices, and the quarterly report he hadn't finished the night before because the figures on page fourteen hadn't matched projections, and he had enough discipline to sleep before reading bad numbers with a tired mind. A tired mind made mistakes. Mistakes were not permitted. He opened the report at page fourteen. Found the problem in forty seconds — a data entry error from the Medan division's finance team, not a projection failure. Easier than he'd feared. He logged a note, scheduled a seven a.m. call with the division head. Early enough to signal urgency. Not so early it would look like panic. Raiden Arkana did not panic. He ordered coffee from the machine wired into his room's system — three shots of espresso, no milk, no sugar, no negotiation — and returned to the report. At four twenty-seven, everything looked like a perfectly ordinary Tuesday. That changed at four fifty-one, when Mira spoke. "Mr. Arkana." He didn't lift his eyes from the screen. "I'm reading." "I know. I apologize for the interruption." A one-second pause — one second that no AI system needed for processing, one second that had always made Raiden faintly uneasy because he'd never found a satisfactory technical explanation for it. "There's an anomaly in the building's security system." Now he looked up. "Which floor." Not a question. Interrogative grammar wasted time. "Floor forty-nine." Mira's voice held its usual register — no AI should have inflection, and yet Mira always sounded like someone choosing her words with deliberate care. "CCTV feeds for sectors B-7 through B-12 have been down since twelve-oh-three a.m. I've attempted three system reboots. No change." "Hardware failure." "That was my first hypothesis." Another pause. "But hardware failure doesn't explain why the system logs show those cameras still active and transmitting. They're on, Mr. Arkana. They simply aren't recording anything." Raiden closed the report. Mira continued: "The last registered access to floor forty-nine was Han Soo-Jin. Head of Research and Development. Her keycard logged entry at eleven forty-two p.m. There is no record of exit." The room felt one degree colder. Or perhaps that was the air conditioning, which he always set three degrees below recommendation on the grounds that heat slowed cognition. "Try her personal number." "Three attempts since two a.m., when the anomaly was first detected. The line rings. No answer." Raiden stood. His hand found the jacket draped over the chair back — black, as everything in his wardrobe was — and he shrugged into it while his mind was already three moves ahead. Han Soo-Jin. Forty-one years old. KAIST graduate. Six years with Arkana Corp, recruited away from two multinationals that had apparently never forgiven him for it. Meticulous. Loyal. Not once late in six years — not by one minute. People like that didn't simply vanish. "Activate internal search protocol. Send security to floor forty-nine." "Both measures were initiated at two a.m., Mr. Arkana. Han Soo-Jin was not found." The pause that followed lasted longer than the others. "And there is a secondary issue with the security personnel." "What kind of issue." "They won't go back." Raiden stopped in front of the door. "Won't, or can't?" "They say won't. But biometric data from their smartwatches — cortisol, heart rate — is consistent with acute fight-or-flight response." "So can't." "The more accurate conclusion, yes." He drew a single controlled breath. "Is there anything else I need to know before I go down?" Mira didn't answer immediately. Three seconds. Five. "Yes." Her voice shifted — not dramatically, but enough for him to register it. Like someone forced to choose between two inadequate options. "But I think it's something you should see for yourself." The lift from the penthouse to the lobby took forty-three seconds. Raiden counted, not because he wanted the figure, but because his mind did it automatically when nothing else required processing. Forty-three seconds. Sixty floors. Acceleration and deceleration curves engineered for passenger comfort, not time efficiency. If he had designed this lift himself, he would have shaved at least ten seconds off the cycle by optimizing the acceleration gradient. But he hadn't designed this lift. He'd designed the building as a whole — and he was aware, as the floors ticked downward, that there was exactly one thing inside this building he had not designed. Floor forty-nine. Sector seventeen. He'd never said it aloud. Not in meetings, not in documents, not in any conversation with anyone, including Elias. The room existed in the original construction blueprints — blueprints he'd found eight years ago when he acquired the land and the aging structure that had been demolished to make way for Arkana Tower — but not in any schematic he'd approved since. He'd sealed it. Locked it. Declined to think further about it. That decision had been made when he was twenty-four years old, and for eight years it had served him adequately. The lobby doors opened. Elias Vorn stood at the center of the atrium with his hands clasped behind his back and an expression too composed for the circumstances — the particular composure of a man who had already made a decision he could not unmake. Beside him: two security officers standing the way people stand when they are trying not to look afraid and failing. And in the far corner of the lobby, her back against a structural column, stood a woman Raiden didn't recognize. Leather jacket, dark brown, worn pale at the left elbow. Hair pulled back in a knot that looked assembled during some other activity entirely. A film camera — analog, not digital — hanging from a strap around her neck. She wasn't standing like a visitor. She was standing like someone who had already decided the room belonged to her. Raiden walked toward Elias. "Explain." Elias gave a small nod — not deference, more the acknowledgment of a man confirming he'd prepared for this. "Han Soo-Jin hasn't been located. The floor forty-nine feeds are still blank." His eyes moved briefly toward the woman in the corner. "We also have a guest. Arrived at five a.m. No appointment, no clearance. Security asked her to wait outside three times." "She didn't move." "She did not." "Who let her in?" "No one. She came in on her own." Raiden looked at her. She was already looking at him — had been, he suspected, since the moment the lift doors parted. Dark eyes, unhurried. No adjustment in posture when she registered who he was. No flicker of the social recalibration people typically performed in the presence of someone who owned the building they were standing in. He walked toward her. Every step he took in the direction of someone usually produced small corrections in that person — a straightening of the spine, a smoothing of expression, a dozen micro-adjustments that acknowledged hierarchy. The woman made none. "Who are you." "Nara Senja." No question about who he was. She already knew. "Independent investigator." "I didn't contact an investigator." "You have a missing employee." A slight lift of one shoulder — not disrespect, simply the acknowledgment of facts that were going to remain facts regardless of how they were received. "I don't wait to be invited when a case needs working." "This is private property." "Sub-level B-2 has a motion sensor that hasn't been recalibrated in three years." There was something at the corner of her mouth — not quite a smile, more like the expression of someone who had calculated the value of information and arrived at a fair number. "You have three hundred security staff and no one flagged it. I thought that was worth mentioning." Raiden held her gaze for seven full seconds. Seven seconds was usually enough to read a person — the way they carried weight in their feet, where their eyes moved under observation, what the small details of posture and clothing and stillness revealed beneath what they were presenting. What he read from Nara Senja in seven seconds: she wasn't lying about her identity. The analog camera at her chest had been used — the film counter was mid-roll. There was a notebook in her left jacket pocket, the rectangular outline unmistakable. Her hands were still. Her eyes did not drift. Liars followed one of two patterns: too much eye contact, or not enough. Nara Senja held his gaze in measured proportion. That wasn't unusual. That was trained. "Former law enforcement," he said. Something moved across her face — fast, almost nothing. "Former." "Why former?" "Same question I've been asking myself for two years." She pushed herself off the column, straightening without performance. "But we don't have time for that." "Why not." "Because your employee has been missing for over six hours." For the first time she looked something other than entirely certain — not afraid, but the expression of someone weighing whether evidence was sufficient before presenting a conclusion. "And if this follows the same pattern as something I've seen before, every hour we wait narrows the margin considerably." The lobby was quiet. Elias hadn't moved. The two security officers were looking at each other but saying nothing. Through the vast glass facade, Surabaya was beginning its morning — the sky edging from black to the muted gray that preceded color, indifferent to whatever was happening inside this building. "What pattern," Raiden said. Nara reached into the left pocket of her jacket and produced a notebook — the kind no one bought new anymore, its cover creased at angles suggesting years of being shoved into small spaces. She'd already tabbed a page. She held it open so he could see. The page held a photograph. Not a crime scene photograph in any conventional sense — no blood, no body. A photograph of a wall. And on that wall, visible only because whoever had taken the picture had caught the light at the right oblique angle, a pattern of lines. Hundreds of them, thin and uniform and precise. "Where is this?" Raiden asked. "Floor forty-eight. Sector B-6." Nara closed the notebook. "I found it an hour ago, before your security team asked me to come down here." "You were on floor forty-eight." "I was on floor forty-eight." He turned to Elias. Elias made the small gesture that meant I don't know how this happened and I'm uncertain how to account for it. Raiden turned back. "What exactly did you find on that wall." "Something we should look at together." She held the notebook at her side. "I can describe what I saw. What I can't do is explain what it means." A pause — deliberate, not uncertain. "But I think you can. Or at least — I think you're closer to that answer than anyone else in this building right now." Five seconds. Ten. Raiden made his decision. Not because he trusted her. Trust was not a category he had operated in for the thirty-two years of his life, and he saw no logical basis for introducing it now simply because the circumstances were unusual. But he had one rule he'd never broken: available data had to be examined before it could be dismissed. And Nara Senja — who had entered a secured building uninvited, accessed a restricted floor, and found something his own team had missed — was data he couldn't dismiss. "Elias." "Raiden—" "Wait here." Elias didn't argue. But he also didn't dip his head the way he usually did. For one unreadable moment he simply stood there, watching Raiden with an expression that was neither compliance nor resistance — something caught between the two, in a place that had no clean name. Raiden didn't analyze it further. He turned to Nara. "Show me." She walked to the lift without waiting for him. Didn't look back to confirm he was following. Raiden followed — one step behind, for the first time in longer than he could recall. They didn't speak for the first twenty-seven seconds inside the lift. Raiden counted. Nara faced the doors and appeared to be looking at something the polished metal surface didn't actually contain — the expression of a person running several processes simultaneously and choosing not to perform any of them. The floor indicator climbed. L... 5... 10... 15... "You said you'd seen this pattern before," Raiden said. "Yes." "Where." "The case that ended my career." No hesitation, no self-consciousness about it. "Two years ago. Different building. Different city. Same marks on the wall." "The outcome." A pause. "Two people disappeared. Neither was ever found." 30... 35... 40... "The case was closed?" "Classified as a workplace accident and closed, yes." "But you didn't accept that conclusion." "Nobody who disappears and leaves markings like that behind dies in a workplace accident." For the first time she turned to look at him — briefly, but long enough for him to register that underneath the steadiness she projected, something older than this case lived in her. "The same way cameras that are on but aren't recording aren't a technical malfunction." The lift opened onto floor forty-eight. The corridor was empty and bright — motion-triggered panels illuminating ahead of them one by one as Nara stepped out. Raiden followed. The air here was different from the lobby below. Colder, but not because of climate control. Cold like the absence of something rather than the presence of cold itself. "Left," said Nara. "Twenty meters." They walked. Light panels activated in front of them, died behind. Their shadows stretched and compressed in alternation, unable to settle on a shape. Nara stopped before a wall that looked like every other wall on this floor — grey concrete panel, standard finish, nothing notable in overhead light. She took a torch from her right jacket pocket and switched it on, then angled the beam nearly horizontal against the surface. And beneath that raking light, in the texture of the concrete that should have been flat and uniform, something appeared. Lines. Hundreds of thin, consistent, precisely rendered lines forming a pattern that repeated four times along two meters of wall. Each repetition identical to the last. Not scratches. Not vandalism. Something made with a tool and patience and clear intent. Raiden went still. He didn't recognize the whole pattern. But he recognized enough of it. The central cluster of each repetition — seven lines intersecting at specific angles, each meeting point exact — was a notation he had seen once before. In his mother's handwriting. In a notebook he'd found in a box of her papers after Serafina Arkana died, a notebook he'd brought to the one professor who might have been able to decode it, who had looked at the pages for a long time before saying: "Your mother sometimes worked on things ahead of her time. These are coordinate markers for something we don't have a name for yet." Raiden stood without moving for eight full seconds. Beside him, Nara waited with the patience of someone long accustomed to letting others arrive at their own speed. "You've seen this before," she said finally. Not a question. Raiden said nothing. Which was its own answer. "What does it mean?" Nara asked. Inside his head, a calculation was running with too many unconfirmed variables to produce a conclusion he could trust. But one inference kept forcing itself forward — pushing through every protocol that said wait, verify, don't extrapolate from incomplete data — an inference that refused to remain unacknowledged. Someone was using his mother's notation. In his building. On the same night one of his most valued employees had walked in and not walked out. "I don't know," he said. Words he was unaccustomed to forming. Nara switched off the torch. In the single second of darkness before the motion sensors reacted, Raiden became aware — not through sight, not through sound, but through some older and less mappable sense — that something was watching them from the direction of that wall. Something patient. Something that had been patient for a very long time. The lights came on. The corridor looked exactly as it should. "We need access to floor forty-nine," Nara said. Raiden was already walking toward the lift before she finished the sentence.
