THE INTERROGATION WITHOUT WORDS

Caelan did not believe in mercy. He believed in truth. And truth was always extracted. Never given. That was why he kept Lian in his private study that night. No guards. No windows open. Just the two of them. A single candle. And a knife on the desk. He did not intend to use it. He wanted her to think he would. “Sit,” he said. Lian sat on the floor. Not on the chair. Submissive. As a maid should be. Her back straight. Her hands folded in her lap. He circled her. Slow. Boots on stone. The only sound in the room. “You don’t speak,” he said. “You don’t write unless I ask. You flinch when Lysandra touches you.” He stopped behind her. Close enough to smell her hair. Soap. Ash. And something else. Something cold. Like deep water. Like the Abyss. “Why are you afraid of her?” No answer. Caelan picked up the knife. He turned it in his hand. The blade caught the candlelight and threw it across the walls. Lian’s eyes tracked it. No fear. Only… calculation. That was wrong. A real servant would be crying by now. Begging. This girl was watching. Measuring. “You’re not a maid,” Caelan said quietly. He crouched in front of her. Their faces were a breath apart. Her brown eyes were wet. Or maybe it was just the candle. “Tell me your name,” he said. “Your real name.” Lian shook her head. Once. Caelan’s jaw tightened. “If you are a spy for Lysandra, I will know. If you are an assassin, I will know.” He lifted the knife. Not to her throat. To her hand. He turned her palm up. There was a scar across it. Old. White. Thin. The kind you get from holding something sharp for too long. The kind you get from training with a sword every day since you were six. Maids didn’t have sword scars. Empresses did. Caelan’s blood went cold. “Aurelia,” he whispered. Lian’s breath stopped. For one second, her mask cracked. Her eyes flashed. Not brown. Gold. Molten sun. Fire under water. The Abyss itself staring back at him. Then she blinked. And it was gone. Tears fell instead. Big. Silent. She yanked her hand back and pressed it to her chest. She looked terrified. Broken. Small. But Caelan had seen it. He had seen gold. He stood up so fast his chair fell. The sound was loud in the quiet room. His heart was pounding like a war drum. It was impossible. He had watched her die. He had held her as the black water took her. He had felt her go cold in his arms. “You’re dead,” he said. His voice broke. “I killed you.” Lian said nothing. She just stared at the floor. Her shoulders shaking. Caelan wanted to grab her. To shake the truth out of her. To scream her name until the ghost answered. To ask her why. Why she was alive. Why she came back. Why she saved him. Instead, he did something worse. He put the knife down. “I won’t tell Lysandra,” he said. His voice was rough. “But you will tell me. Eventually.” He turned and walked out. Locked the door behind him. Outside, his hands were shaking. Because if she was Aurelia… Then the empire was already burning. He just didn’t know it yet. --- Lian didn’t move for a long time after he left. She sat in the dark. The candle burned down. Wax dripped on the stone. Her hand was still trembling. Not from fear. From control. She had almost slipped. One look. One flash. And he saw her. `Aurelia.` The name in his voice had sounded like prayer. And like a curse. She pressed her palm to her face. The scar burned. The scar she got at fifteen, when her brother first put a wooden sword in her hand. `Hold it like you mean it, Lia. Or it will cut you.` It had cut her. Many times. She stood. Her legs were weak. She went to the door and pressed her ear to it. Footsteps. Fading. He was gone. Only then did she allow herself to breathe. Gold. She had shown him gold. Stupid. Reckless. The Abyss had taught her patience. But seeing him again had ripped it all away. He looked older. Harder. The boy she married was gone. In his place was a man who put a knife on the table to test her. Good. She needed him hard. She needed him cruel. Because the woman she was going to become would need a tyrant to break. Lian touched her wrist. Under the skin, the gold pulsed. Angry. Awake. `Not yet`, she told it. `Not until he kneels.` --- Caelan didn’t go to his room. He went to the armory. Alone. He slammed his fist into the stone wall until his knuckles bled. Once. Twice. Three times. It didn’t help. Gold eyes. That flash. He would never forget it. He had seen it on their wedding night. Right before he pushed the dagger in. She had looked at him with gold eyes and said, `“I thought you loved me.”` And he had. That was the problem. He sank to his knees on the cold floor. Around him, swords and armor gleamed in the dark. If she was alive, then everything was a lie. The Emperor’s order. The execution. The body they never found. If she was alive, then he was a murderer who failed. A laugh escaped him. Bitter. Broken. He pressed his forehead to the floor. “I killed you,” he whispered to no one. “I watched you fall.” The armory was silent. Then a voice behind him. Soft. Amused. “Talking to ghosts, Caelan?” Lysandra. She stepped out of the shadows. Red dress. Red lips. A wine glass in her hand. She had been watching him. Caelan didn’t stand. “What do you want?” “I want to know why you’re hiding a girl in your study,” Lysandra said. She sipped her wine. “And why you lied to me about her.” “She’s nothing.” “Nothing doesn’t make you bleed your knuckles on a wall.” Lysandra crouched next to him. Her perfume was sweet. Rotten. “Is she the one? The ghost?” Caelan looked at her. “You’re insane.” “Am I?” Lysandra smiled. “Then let me interrogate her. One night. That’s all I ask.” “No.” The word was final. Lysandra’s smile faded. “Careful, husband. You’re protecting something that doesn’t belong to you.” She stood and walked away. But her last words hung in the air. “If she bleeds gold, the Emperor will burn her. And you with her.” Caelan stayed on the floor long after she was gone. --- Back in the study, Lian still hadn’t slept. She heard the lock click. Caelan came in. He looked wrecked. Hair messy. Knuckles bloody. Eyes red. He didn’t look at her. He sat at the desk. Put his head in his hands. Minutes passed. Then, without looking up, he said, “Why did you save me?” Lian didn’t answer. “Was it her?” he asked. “Lysandra? Did she send you to get close to me?” Silence. Caelan slammed his fist on the desk. The candle jumped. “Answer me!” Lian flinched. For real this time. Caelan saw it. He deflated. “Right,” he said quietly. “You don’t speak.” He stood and walked to her. He crouched again. This time he didn’t have a knife. He just looked at her. Really looked. “I saw your eyes,” he whispered. “In the yard. And tonight.” A pause. “I want to believe I’m seeing things.” Lian met his gaze. Brown. Wet. Innocent. But under that, the gold waited. Caelan reached out. His thumb brushed her cheek. Rough. Like he was testing if she was real. “You have three days,” he said. “To tell me the truth. Or I will give you to Lysandra myself.” It was a lie. And Lian knew it. Because the man who said that was the same man who just bled for her. She lowered her eyes. “Yes, Your Highness.” Caelan stood. He blew out the candle. The room went dark. In the dark, he said one last thing. “If you are her… don’t make me kill you twice.” Then he left. Lian lay down on the cold floor. Outside, the palace was quiet. Inside, two ghosts were circling each other. And only one of them knew the other was already dead.
