THE GOLD IN HER VEINS

Lysandra Veyne did not trust silence. Silence meant secrets. And secrets meant threats to her throne. She stood in Caelan’s empty antechamber. Alone. Her gloved fingers ran over the maid’s thin mattress. Rough cloth. Cold. No perfume. No jewelry. No letters. No hairpin. Nothing but a wooden bowl and a linen dress folded too neatly. “Too perfect,” she murmured. Her informant had reported everything. Word for word. The Crown Prince carried the maid himself after the attack. He lied to the court about her illness. He kept her in his private room for three nights. He sent away the guards. Caelan had never done that for anyone. Not for generals. Not for dukes. Not even for her. Her jaw tightened. “Second Empress,” her guard said from the door. “The girl is back from the kitchens.” Lysandra didn’t turn. “Bring her in.” The door opened. Lian entered. Head bowed. Eyes to the floor. Shoulders hunched. The picture of a broken, mute servant. The picture of someone who wanted to disappear. Lysandra smiled. The kind of smile that made grown men confess to crimes they didn’t commit. “Kneel.” Lian knelt. No sound. No hesitation. “Look at me.” Slowly, Lian raised her head. Brown eyes. Dull. Empty. Submissive. Lysandra studied her. Every inch. The dirt under her nails. The calluses on her palms. The faint scar on her collarbone. It was not Aurelia’s eyes. Aurelia’s were gold. Sharp. Arrogant. Like she owned the room just by breathing. These were the eyes of prey. Of a rabbit waiting for the hawk. And yet… Something was wrong. Lysandra could feel it. Like a splinter under her skin. “Extend your arm,” Lysandra ordered. Lian hesitated. For half a second. Too long. Then she obeyed. The sleeve pulled back, revealing thin, pale skin. No marks. No bruises. No veins. Lysandra grabbed Lian’s wrist. Hard. Lian flinched. “Did I tell you to move?” Lysandra’s voice was soft. Deadly. Lian froze. Lysandra’s thumb pressed into the inner arm. Right where a vein would jump under stress. Right where blood ran closest to the surface. “Struggle,” Lysandra whispered. Lian’s breath hitched. For one terrifying second, Lysandra saw it. A flicker. A thin line of gold under the skin. Like fire trapped in glass. Like molten metal under ice. Then it was gone. Lian’s eyes filled with tears. Not defiance. Fear. She began to tremble. Violently. Like a rabbit in a trap. “P-please, Your Highness,” she whispered. “I’m sorry. I’m just… I’m scared.” Lysandra let go. She stepped back and wiped her glove on her dress, like Lian’s skin was dirty. “You’re afraid of me,” she said softly. “Good. You should be.” Lian dropped her head again. “Yes, Your Highness.” Lysandra turned to leave. But she paused at the door. “Tell the Crown Prince I came to check on his pet.” She looked over her shoulder. Her smile was gone. “And tell him…” A pause. “That I am watching her.” The door slammed shut. Only when the footsteps faded did Lian breathe. Her hands were shaking. Not from fear. From rage. She pressed her wrist to her chest. Under the skin, the gold pulsed once. Angry. Then it hid again. Deep. `Almost exposed`, Aurelia thought. `One second more and she would have seen it.` Her heart was hammering. Not because Lysandra scared her. Because for the first time in three years, someone had almost touched the truth. The Dragon Blood had reacted to Lysandra’s touch. It had wanted to burn her. To brand her. To show the Empress who she was dealing with. Aurelia closed her eyes. The Abyss had given her a second life. Cold water. Black stone. And a promise whispered to the dark: `I will rise. I will make them kneel.` She would not waste it by being careless. Next time, she would make Lysandra bleed for touching her. --- Later that night, Caelan came back. He didn’t knock. He never did in his own rooms. Lian was sitting by the window again. Same spot. Same posture. But her wrist was hidden under her sleeve. “You met her,” Caelan said. It wasn’t a question. Lian nodded. “What did she do?” Lian lifted her arm. Slowly. She pulled back the sleeve. A faint red mark was already forming where Lysandra’s fingers had been. Five prints. Like a brand. Caelan’s face went blank. “She tested you,” he said. Lian nodded again. “Did she see anything?” Lian hesitated. Then she shook her head. Caelan stared at her for a long time. He looked at the mark. At her downcast eyes. At the way she was holding herself together by threads. “Lysandra doesn’t test people unless she thinks they’re lying,” he said quietly. “If she’s testing you, it means she suspects you.” Lian’s throat moved. “What will she do, Your Highness?” Caelan didn’t answer right away. He walked to the table. Poured two cups of water. He handed one to her. “She will dig,” he said. “Into your past. Into the village you came from. Into the house that was erased.” He looked at her. “And she will find nothing. Because I made sure there was nothing to find.” Lian blinked. “You… you did that?” “I did.” His voice was flat. But his hand was steady when he gave her the cup. For three years he had been the Emperor’s blade. He had burned records. He had erased names. He had lied to the court. He had never done it for anyone but the throne. Until now. “Drink,” he said. Lian obeyed. The water was cold. It did nothing for the fire under her skin. Caelan sat across from her. Not on the chair. On the floor. Like she was. “You’re shaking,” he said. “It’s nothing.” “It’s not nothing.” Silence. Then Caelan did something he hadn’t done since he was twelve. He reached out and took her hand. His fingers were warm. Callused. A warrior’s hands. He turned her wrist over. Looked at the red marks. “She touched you,” he said. Quietly. “No one touches what’s mine.” Lian’s breath caught. `What’s mine.` The words should have made her sick. They should have made her want to pull away. They didn’t. Because for the first time, someone in this palace was choosing her. Not as a tool. Not as a ghost. As something worth protecting. “Your Highness,” she whispered. “Why?” Caelan didn’t look at her. He was still staring at her wrist. “Because you saved me,” he said. “And I don’t forget debts.” It was a lie. And they both knew it. Lian looked down at their joined hands. Under her skin, the gold stirred. Just once. Like it recognized him. She pulled her hand back before he could feel it. “Thank you,” she said. Caelan stood. “Get some sleep. Tomorrow she’ll try again. In a different way.” He walked to the door. “Your Highness?” He stopped. Lian was looking at him. Brown eyes. Tired. But for a second, the candlelight caught them wrong. And Caelan saw fire. “Be careful,” she said. “She’s not the only one watching.” Caelan’s jaw tightened. “I know.” He left. In the dark, Lian lay on the mat and stared at the ceiling. Her wrist still burned. Not from Lysandra’s grip. From the gold. It was getting harder to hide. Every time someone touched her. Every time she felt rage. Every time Caelan looked at her like that. The Dragon was waking up. And when it woke fully… The palace would burn.
