THE FIRST LIE HE TELLS

Caelan had never lied to Lysandra. Not when she poisoned his wine at seventeen and called it “a test of his strength.” Not when she framed a duke for treason and smiled while the man’s head rolled. Not when she suggested, over tea, that they execute House Vale without a trial. "Cleaner that way," she had said. "No witnesses. No songs." He had been honest because he believed the empire demanded truth. Cold, brutal, uncompromising truth. Lies were for weak men. For politicians. For women like Lysandra. Until Lian. The court physician’s words still echoed in his skull. `“Fever. Exhaustion. Nothing more. She is a weak girl, Your Highness. The palace work is too much for her.”` It was a lie. He knew it. He had been the one who carried her back to his antechamber. She had been shaking. Violently. Her skin was cold despite the heat of his arms. Like she had just come out of deep water. And when he had peeled back her sleeve to check for wounds, to see if the assassin’s blade had touched her, he had seen it. A faint, golden vein. Just under the skin of her wrist. It glowed for half a second. Like molten metal. Like sunlight trapped under ice. Then it was gone. As if he had imagined it. But Caelan Blackthorne did not imagine things. “Your Highness?” The steward bowed at the door. His head was so low Caelan could see the bald spot. “Second Empress Lysandra requests your presence. Immediately. She heard the maid fell ill during the attack.” Caelan closed his eyes. For one second, he considered telling the truth. `She is hiding something. Her eyes changed. She moves like a soldier. She may be a threat to the throne.` That was what he should say. That was what the Crown Prince of Blackthorne was supposed to do. But the image of Lian’s eyes stopped him. Not brown. Not then. Terrified. Begging. But not for herself. She had looked at him like he was the one drowning. “Tell her,” Caelan said. His voice was flat. Dead. “The girl is weak. She fainted from scrubbing floors and the shock of the assassin. I sent her to rest. She is of no importance.” The lie tasted like ash. Like iron. Like betrayal. It sat on his tongue and burned. The steward hesitated. “Of... of no importance, Your Highness?” “Of. No. Importance.” “Yes, Your Highness.” The man fled. Lysandra would not believe him. She was too sharp, too hungry, too good at smelling blood. But she would have no proof. And without proof, she could not touch Lian. Not yet. Not while Caelan stood in the way. That was new. Protecting someone from Lysandra. That night, he returned to his chambers alone. The room was dark. Only one candle burned by the window. Lian was there. Sitting on the floor. No bed. No mat. Just her back against the wall. She did not bow when he entered. She did not speak. She did not pretend to sleep. She just looked at him. Those brown eyes. Dull. Tired. False. He was sure of it now. The silence stretched. It was heavier than the silence in the Emperor’s hall. “Why did you save me?” he asked. His voice was rough. He hadn’t used it all day. She blinked. Once. Twice. Her hands, thin and scarred from work, moved to her lap. She looked down. He had asked her that question a hundred times in his head since the Abyss. To Aurelia. On their wedding night. Right before he put the dagger in. `Why? Why did you look at me like that?` She had never answered. Lian lifted her hand. Slowly. Her fingers moved in the air. Deliberate. `Because you looked like you were drowning.` Caelan’s chest tightened. Drowning. That was the word. That was exactly how he had felt three years ago. Standing on the bridge over the Abyss. Watching Aurelia’s body disappear into black water. Her gold dress spreading like ink. Her eyes open. He had felt the water in his lungs. In his head. In his soul. He took a step closer. The candlelight caught her face. The shadows under her eyes. The cut on her lip from where she had bitten it to stay quiet. For half a second, her eyes did not look brown. They caught the flame and turned. Not brown. Not gold. Fire. Molten. Alive. “Don’t lie to me,” he whispered. Lian did not flinch. She did not look away. She held his gaze. Steady. Unafraid. And in that silence, Caelan made a decision he would regret for the rest of his life. He would protect her. Even if it meant lying to the Emperor. Even if it meant lying to Lysandra. Even if it meant lying to the entire empire. Even if she was the ghost he had killed. The thought should have horrified him. It didn’t. “From now on,” he said, “you do not speak to anyone but me. You do not leave this room without me. Do you understand?” Lian nodded. Once. “Good.” He turned to go. His hand was on the door when her voice stopped him. It was the first time she had spoken to him directly. “Your Highness.” He turned. She was still sitting on the floor. Small. Broken. But her back was straight. “Thank you,” she said. Her voice was hoarse from disuse. “For the lie.” Caelan stared at her. She knew. She knew it was a lie. She knew what it cost him. He did not answer. He left. In the hall, Lysandra was waiting. She was leaning against the wall. Arms crossed. In a red dress that looked like blood in the torchlight. “You lied to me,” she said. No greeting. Caelan kept walking. “I told the steward the truth.” “You told him she was nothing.” Lysandra fell into step beside him. “But you carried her yourself. You sent away the guards. You stayed with her for an hour.” She looked up at him. Her eyes were searching. “Since when do you care about maids, Caelan?” “Since she took a blade for me.” “Did she?” Lysandra’s smile was thin. “Or did you want her to?” Caelan stopped. He looked down at her. “Be careful, Lysandra.” “Or what?” She laughed. “You’ll lie to me again?” She walked away. But her last words followed him. “I will find out what she is. And when I do, I will cut the gold right out of her.” Caelan did not sleep that night. He sat at his desk. Maps. Reports. Names of houses that were loyal. Names of houses that were not. He wrote nothing. All he could see was gold. Under skin. In eyes. In fire. At dawn, he went back to his chambers. Lian was asleep now. Finally. Curled on the mat. Her face peaceful. For a moment, she looked like Aurelia. The same line of her jaw. The same way her hair fell. Caelan knelt. He did not touch her. He just watched. The physician was wrong. This was not exhaustion. This was a girl running for her life. And she had run straight to him. Why? He reached out. His thumb hovered over her cheek. He remembered wiping mud away in the yard. He remembered the flash of gold. He pulled his hand back. The first lie was the hardest. The second would be easier. The third would be a habit. And he had just promised to tell a hundred more. Outside, the palace woke up. Guards changed shifts. Servants whispered. Lysandra sharpened her knives. And inside, the Crown Prince of Blackthorne committed treason. Not with a sword. With a lie.
