THE FIRST CRACK

Midnight. The palace was silent. Not the peaceful kind. The kind of silence that came before a blade. An assassin came for Caelan. Lian heard it first. The breath that was not his. Too shallow. Too controlled. The steel that did not sing. No scabbard. No clink. Just air moving wrong. She moved before she thought. Her body slammed into Caelan’s bed. She hit him hard. Shoulder to ribs. He went down with a grunt. A black blade missed his throat by an inch and buried itself in silk with a soft, wet sound. Feathers and down puffed up around the hilt. The assassin cursed. It was a low sound in a foreign tongue. He rolled, dagger flashing in the moonlight from the window. Caelan was already awake. Sword in hand. No grogginess. No fear. Only cold. “Stay down,” he ordered. Lian did not. She was already between him and the blade. The assassin lunged. He was fast. Palace-trained. He aimed for Caelan’s heart over Lian’s shoulder. Lian’s hand shot out. She caught his wrist mid-air. Snap. The same sound as Eunuch Han. Clean. Final. The wrist broke. The dagger fell and clattered on the stone. The assassin’s eyes widened. Pain first. Then recognition. In the moonlight, the herb paste was gone. Sweat. Blood. Fear had washed it all away. Her hair had come loose from its braid. Her face was bare. Her eyes were gold. Molten. Ancient. Dragon. The color of a house that was supposed to be erased. The color that meant death for everyone in this room. The assassin screamed. Not from pain. From terror. “Dragon blood…” Lian did not let him finish. Her fist hit his throat. Straight. Precise. The cartilage collapsed. He dropped. Dead before he hit the floor. Silence. Only the sound of her breathing. Hard. And Caelan’s. Caelan stood frozen. His sword was still raised. But it was pointed at her now. Not at the dead man. At her. Lian turned. Slow. She was covered in blood. Not hers. The assassin’s. It ran down her arm. Her hair was undone, black over her shoulders. Her mask was gone. And her eyes… her eyes were burning gold. She did not kneel. She met his gaze. Caelan looked at her. Really looked. Not at Lian the maid with brown eyes and muddy cheeks. Not at the shadow he had pulled from the barracks. At Aurelia. The ghost. The girl he had danced with. The girl he had kissed. The girl he had killed. His face went white. All the color drained. “You…” His voice broke. It was barely a whisper. “You’re dead.” Lian said nothing. The gold in her eyes did not fade. It burned brighter. “I threw you into the Abyss,” he whispered. His sword was shaking now. Just a little. “I watched you fall. I watched the water close over you.” “I did fall,” she said. Her voice was not Lian’s. It was not small or broken or submissive. It was Aurelia’s. Cold. Royal. Unforgiving. The voice that used to command a court. “And I rose.” Caelan’s sword shook harder. “You betrayed me,” she said. She took a step forward. Blood dripped from her fingers onto the stone. “You put a dagger in my heart. On my wedding night. While I was wearing your ring.” “I had to,” he said. The words were torn out of him. They sounded like they hurt. “The Emperor ordered it. Your house was.....” “Traitors?” She took another step. She was three steps away now. Unarmed. Unafraid. “My house was loyal. For a hundred years. Until yours lied. Until yours got scared of dragon fire.” Caelan did not lower the sword. But he did not strike. His arm was locked. His jaw was locked. “Why are you here?” he asked. His voice was hoarse. “To kill me?” Lian tilted her head. Like she was studying him. Like he was a puzzle she had already solved. “No,” she said. “Killing you is mercy.” She smiled. And it was the smile from the Abyss. The smile she had practiced in the dark for three years. “I am here to make you kneel. In front of the empire that watched me die. I am here to make you watch me take everything you stole.” The dead assassin between them seemed to breathe. The room was too small. The air was too thick. Caelan’s sword clattered to the floor. He did not attack. He did not run. He stared. At the woman he murdered. At the Empress who came back from the dead to collect. Lian reached up. With her free hand she wiped the last of the mud from her face. The last of Lian was gone. Aurelia Vale stood in his room. No mask. No lies. No herbs. Just gold eyes and a promise written in blood. Outside the door, footsteps. Heavy. Fast. Guards. Coming. Lysandra’s voice, sharp and cutting through the door: “Your Highness? What happened? Open the door!” Caelan did not look away from Lian. “Hide,” he said. Only two words. Lian did not move. “Hide,” he said again. Harder. Urgent. “Now.” For a second, she saw it. In his eyes. Fear. Not for himself. For her. Lian moved. Fast. She kicked the dead assassin under the bed with her foot. She grabbed a rag from the wash basin. Smeared blood across her face. Messed her hair. Fell to the floor and let her body go limp. The door burst open. Guards. Swords drawn. Lysandra at the front in a night robe, hair wild. And Caelan. Standing alone in the middle of the room. Sword on the floor. Breathing hard. Chest heaving. “What happened?” Lysandra shrieked. Her eyes went to the blood on the floor. To the feathers. To Caelan. “Assassin,” Caelan said. His voice was steady. Too steady. “Came through the window. The maid saved me. She’s hurt.” He pointed at Lian. Crumpled on the floor near the bed. Blood on her face. Eyes closed. Brown again. The gold was gone. Hidden. Lysandra’s eyes narrowed. She didn’t look at the bed. She didn’t look at the window. She looked at Lian. Then at Caelan. Caelan stepped between them. Deliberate. His body blocked Lysandra’s line of sight. “Get a physician,” he ordered. His tone allowed no argument. “Now.” The guards moved. Two of them went to Lian. Lifted her. She was dead weight. Lysandra did not. She stared at Lian’s crumpled form. At the blood. At the stillness. At the way her hand hung. Then at Caelan. Standing there. Protecting her. Her eyes were ice. As they dragged Lian out, Lian did not open her eyes. She let her head loll. Let her breath go shallow. But inside, she smiled. Phase three. He lied for me. In front of the guards. In front of Lysandra. In front of the entire palace. The Crown Prince just chose the dead queen over his living one. The crack in the mask had become a chasm. And the palace was about to fall into it. In the corridor, the physician checked her pulse. “She’s alive, Your Highness. Just fainted from the shock.” Caelan did not answer. He walked ahead. His back was straight. Lysandra walked beside Lian’s stretcher. Her fingers twitched. That night, Lian was put in the infirmary. A small room. One bed. One guard at the door. She waited until the guard’s breathing went deep. Then she opened her eyes. Gold. She pressed a hand to her chest. Her heart was racing. He saw me. He knows. And he still chose to lie. That was not strategy. That was not politics. That was a crack. And cracks, once started, only went one way. Down.
