THE BLADE TEST

Caelan did not sleep that night. Lian knew because she stood guard outside his door until dawn. No chair. No water. No rest. Just her back against the cold stone wall and her eyes on the corridor. Every hour a patrol passed. Every hour she did not move. Her legs ached first. Then her back turned to stone. Then her thoughts went quiet. This was the test. She knew it the moment he assigned her to his door. Maids slept in the barracks. Shadows slept in corners. Only threats slept at a Prince’s door. At sunrise, the sky turned the color of old bruises. The candles in the hall guttered out. The door opened. Caelan stood there himself. No servant. No guard. Just him. His gray eyes were red at the edges. He had not slept either. His black uniform was still perfect. Not a wrinkle. “Follow me,” he said. His voice was rough from disuse. He led her through empty halls. Past sleeping guards. Past kitchens that were just starting to smoke. He did not speak. She did not ask where. He led her to the training yard. It was empty. Cold. The air smelled of steel and old blood. The stone under their feet was stained dark in patches. Too dark to be rust. Two wooden dummies stood in the center. Their faces were carved off. Their bodies were scarred from a thousand strikes. Splinters stuck out like broken teeth. Caelan stopped in the middle of the yard. He turned. “Pick one,” he ordered. He tossed her a wooden sword. Lian caught it. Her fingers remembered the weight instantly. Too well. The balance. The grip. The way her palm settled around the hilt like it belonged there. A soldier’s grip. Not a maid’s. Her heart stopped. “I am a maid, Your Highness,” she said. She kept her voice small. “I do not know how to...” “Lie again,” Caelan said. He picked up the other wooden sword. “And I will cut your tongue out myself.” His voice was flat. Final. No anger. Just fact. Like he was stating the weather. Lian said nothing. She held the wooden sword. Her knuckles were white. The yard was too quiet. Even the birds had stopped. Caelan settled into a stance. Feet apart. Sword loose. Bored. “Attack me.” “I cannot....” “Now.” Something in his tone snapped. She moved. It was not elegant. It was not pretty. It was efficient. Three steps forward. A feint to the left with her shoulder. A strike for his throat. Her body remembered before her mind could stop it. Years of training in the war halls of House Vale. Blood and sweat and her brother correcting her form. Caelan blocked. Easily. One hand. The wood cracked against wood. But his eyes changed. The boredom was gone. “You’ve been trained,” he said. It wasn’t a question. He attacked. Fast. A s***h for her shoulder. Then her ribs. Then her knee. Lian parried. Her body moved on its own. Duck. Step. Turn. Muscle memory was a traitor. It wanted to win. Careful. Too much and you die. Too little and he knows you’re lying. She let him push her back toward the edge of the yard. She let her breath go ragged. She stumbled over a loose stone. On purpose. The wooden sword dropped from her hand. It clattered on the stone. Loud. “I’m sorry, Your Highness!” She fell to her knees. Forehead to dirt. “I panicked at the dinner. I’m not... I’m not good with weapons. Please!” Caelan’s wooden sword stopped an inch from her neck. The tip pressed against her skin. Cold. She could feel her pulse against it. “Look at me.” She looked up. Slow. His gray eyes were on her face. Searching. Hunting. Peeling layers off her one by one. He was not looking at her hands. Not at her stance. At her face. “Your eyes,” he said softly. Too soft. Lian’s blood froze. The herb paste. Sweat and dust from the yard had made it run. At the corner of her left eye, a crack showed. Beneath it, gold. Just a sliver. Like fire under ash. Like a coin hidden in mud. Her violet eyes. The mark of House Vale. The mark the Emperor killed for. Caelan saw it. His sword did not move. His breathing did not change. But his jaw tightened. “What color are your eyes, Lian?” he whispered. Lian’s hand moved. Fast. Desperate. She scooped mud from the yard with her fingers. Filth. Cold and wet. She smeared it across her face. Over her eye. Over the gold. Over her cheek. Over the crack. “Brown, Your Highness,” she said. Her voice did not shake. “They have always been brown.” She lowered her head. Waiting for the blade. Waiting to die. This was it. Three months of planning, ended by sweat. Silence. Only the wind in the yard. The creak of the dummies. Then Caelan lowered his sword. He reached down. His thumb wiped the mud from her cheek. Rough. He was not gentle. His thumb stopped at the corner of her eye. He stared. He stared at the brown. Only brown now. The gold was gone. Hidden under filth and shame. “You’re a terrible liar,” he said. Lian said nothing. Her heart was a drum against her ribs. Caelan stood. He threw the wooden sword away. It skidded across the stone and hit the wall. “You pass,” he said. Lian blinked. Mud dripped down her face. “Your Highness?” “You were supposed to kill me just now.” He turned his back to her. Exposed. The line of his spine. Trusting or daring. She couldn’t tell. “Any assassin would have. Any loyal maid would have screamed and run to the guards.” He looked over his shoulder. Half his face in shadow. “You did neither. You chose to be weak. To fall. To lie badly.” A pause. “That means you have something to hide. But not me.” The words hit harder than the sword. Lian stayed on her knees. Her hands were shaking. For real this time. Not from fear. From relief. From rage. He knows. He doesn’t know. He suspects and he let me live. Why? What game was this? Was this mercy? Was this a longer leash? Caelan stopped at the gate. Without turning, he said, “From tonight, you sleep in my antechamber. On the floor. No more barracks. No more shadows.” “Your Highness, I....” “That is not a request, Lian.” He left. The gate closed behind him with a heavy thud. Lian rose. Her legs were weak. She pressed a hand to her eye. The herb paste was ruined. She would need more tonight. Much more. And better. Far above, on a stone balcony, Lysandra watched. She had seen everything. The sword. The stumble. The mud. The moment Caelan’s thumb touched Lian’s face. Her eyes were narrow. Her nails dug into the stone until white. “That maid,” she whispered to the shadow behind her, “is not a maid.” “Shall I have her removed, Your Highness?” the shadow asked. Voice like silk over a knife. “No.” Lysandra smiled. It was not sweet. It was sharp. “I want to see what the Prince is hiding. If she’s his little secret, then she’s my weapon.” She turned away. “And if she bleeds gold, I will collect it myself.” That night, Lian lay on a thin mat in Caelan’s antechamber. The room was small. One door. One window. One chair. Through the thin wall, she could hear him breathing. Slow. Controlled. Measured. He was not asleep. Neither was she. Two predators. In the same cage. Smelling each other’s blood. Circling. She had his trust. Or the illusion of it. He had her life in his hand. And only one of them knew the other was a dragon. For now. Lian stared at the ceiling. Her fingers touched her eye. The skin was raw from scrubbing. He saw gold. He chose to forget it. He wiped it away and called it brown. That was more dangerous than a sword. Because a man who chooses to lie to himself… is already falling. And when a man like Caelan Blackthorne falls, he takes kingdoms with him. She closed her eyes. Phase three had begun. And the blade had not cut her.
