THE EMPEROR’S TABLE

` The Imperial Dining Hall was a tomb with candles. High vaulted ceilings swallowed sound. Black marble columns stretched up like bones. Gold plates gleamed under a thousand wax lights, but the light felt cold. Jade wine caught the flame and bled green. Silence pressed on the lungs until breathing felt like a crime. Lian stood behind Caelan’s chair. Head down. Hands steady. Invisible. That was the art. A shadow did not breathe too loud. A shadow did not exist unless called. She had been a shadow for three months. She would be one for as long as it took. Across the table sat Emperor Blackthorne. Old. Thin. His spine curved from years of war and poison, but his eyes were still like chipped flint. He had killed his own brother to take the throne. Everyone at this table knew it. No one said it. To his right, Lysandra. Smiling. Poison in silk. Her gown was the color of fresh blood. Her nails were painted the same. She watched the room like a hawk watched a field of mice. To his left, Caelan. Stone-faced. The Imperial Consort. The Dragon’s Blade. The man Lian had sworn to destroy, and now swore to use. “Eat,” the Emperor ordered. His voice was dry leaves over stone. No one moved until he did. Lian poured wine. First for the Emperor. Her hand did not tremble. Then Caelan. The cup was heavy silver. She remembered the weight of swords. This was lighter. More dangerous. Then Lysandra. The woman’s perfume was cloying. It smelled like rot under flowers. Lysandra’s eyes tracked her. Like a cat watching a mouse. Like she already knew. “Your Highness,” Lysandra said sweetly, her voice honey over broken glass. “Your new maid is quite… steady.” Caelan did not look at Lian. He lifted his cup. “She is loyal.” “Loyal?” Lysandra laughed. The sound cracked across the hall. “Or trained?” The Emperor’s gaze lifted. It landed on Lian. Heavy. It was the gaze of a man who had ordered cities burned. “Look at me, girl.” Lian obeyed. Slow. Every inch was calculated. She raised her head. Brown eyes. Dull. Submissive. The color of dirt. The color no one remembered. Under the dye and the herbs, her violet eyes were buried deep. No one would see them. Not tonight. The Emperor studied her for a long time. Long enough for the candles to drip. Long enough for Lysandra’s smile to sharpen. “You have the hands of a fighter,” he said at last. “Not a servant.” His eyes went to her knuckles. Faint scars. Calluses that no kitchen work could make. Lian knelt. The marble was cold through her thin dress. “I was a soldier’s daughter, Majesty. Before my house fell.” “House?” The Emperor leaned forward. The candles reflected in his eyes. “What house?” Lian’s blood went cold. This was the trap. This was always the trap. A name was a noose. “None worth naming, Majesty,” she said. Her voice was low. Broken. “It was erased.” Silence. Erased. The word for traitors. For the dead. For families whose names were scraped from stone and burned from books. To be from an erased house was to be a ghost. And ghosts were not threats. Lysandra’s smile widened. She had her knife. She only needed to slide it in. “A fallen house,” she purred. “How convenient.” Caelan’s fingers tightened on his cup. Just for a second. A crack in the stone. The Emperor did not blink. “Serve the fish.” Lian rose. Her knees ached. She moved to the center table. A silver platter sat under a domed lid. Steamed river fish. A delicacy from the north lakes. And a death sentence if poisoned. She lifted the lid. Steam rose. White and thick. And with it, a scent. Faint. Metallic. Wrong. Not the river. Not the herbs. It was bitterroot. A slow poison. Tasteless in wine. Lethal in hot broth. It was not on the Emperor’s side of the table. It was on Caelan’s. The fish had been cut and arranged for him alone. Lian’s mind moved faster than her hands. Faster than fear. If she warned him, she exposed herself. “Poison” was a word that got shadows beheaded. If she did not, he died. And if he died, she lost her only path to the Emperor. She lost her revenge. So she chose the third path. The one Raven had taught her. Her sleeve slipped. The platter tipped. Hot fish and broth spilled across the table. It ran like a flood. Straight onto Lysandra’s lap. Lysandra shrieked. It was not a noble sound. It was animal. She shot to her feet. Her silk gown was ruined. The broth burned. Her skin went red in seconds. “You clumsy b***h!” she screamed. Spittle flew. “You worthless, filthy—” Guards moved. Swords half-drawn. The sound of steel was loud in the tomb. Lian was already on her knees. Forehead to the floor. Her hair fell forward, hiding her face. “Ten thousand pardons, Majesty! I am unworthy! I am clumsy! I deserve death!” The Emperor’s face was stone. He looked at the ruined table. At the wasted food. At the chaos. Caelan stood. Fast. He moved between Lian and the guards. He grabbed Lian’s arm and hauled her up. His grip was iron. “Enough,” he said. His voice cut the room like a blade. “It was an accident.” He looked at the spilled fish. At the broth soaking into the white tablecloth. The poison was gone. Diluted. Wasted. Then he looked at Lysandra. Drenched. Furious. Ugly. Her perfect mask was gone. Then at Lian. Kneeling. Trembling. Eyes down. The perfect picture of a terrified girl. “Leave,” he told her. “Now.” Lian did not argue. She did not bow again. She fled. Her bare feet were silent on the marble. Behind her, the hall erupted. Lysandra screaming for healers. The Emperor yelling for a new gown, for blood, for someone to blame. Outside the hall, Lian pressed her back to the cold wall. The corridor was dark. Empty. Her hands shook. Not from fear. From control. From the effort of not smiling. The fish was poisoned. She had smelled it. If it had reached Caelan’s mouth, he would be dead in minutes. Convulsing. Blue-lipped. Another “illness” in the palace records. She had spilled it. Taken the blame. Taken the risk of a lashing, of death. I saved you, Caelan. And you don’t even know. A shadow fell over her. Caelan. He had followed. Of course he had. “You did that on purpose,” he said. No question. His eyes were black in the dark. Lian kept her head down. “No, Your Highness.” “Don’t lie to me.” She looked up. Her brown eyes were wet. Not with tears. With defiance. With the truth, shaped into a lie. “The fish smelled wrong, Your Highness,” she whispered. “Bitter. Like the swamps near my village. I… I panicked. I thought it was spoiled. I did not want you to be sick.” Caelan stared at her. For a moment, Aurelia thought he saw her. The real her. Under the mask. Under the herbs. Under the dirt. He saw the princess who had watched her family burn. Then he stepped closer. Close enough that she could smell steel and cedar on him. “From now on,” he said, voice low, meant only for her, “you do not leave my side. Not for a second. You eat what I eat. You sleep outside my door. You are my shadow now, girl.” It was not mercy. It was ownership. It was a cage with golden bars. He turned and walked back into the hall. His back was straight. Untouchable. Lian was left in the corridor. Her heart was not racing. It was singing. He chose me. Over her. In front of the Emperor. In front of the court. He had claimed her. Phase two was over. Infiltration was complete. She was no longer just a maid. She was Caelan’s shadow. Untouchable by Lysandra’s knives. Phase three had begun. Proximity. Trust. The slow poison of influence. And the Emperor had seen her face. And remembered it. A girl from an erased house. A ghost. Ghosts, she thought, are the hardest to kill twice.
