THE LOVER’S SHADOW

The Imperial Gardens were a lie. Roses the color of blood. Fountains that sang like drowned women. Butterflies that did not know they were trapped behind jade walls. The garden was beautiful because it had no choice. Lian knelt by a pond, scrubbing stone. The sun was hot. The work was filth. Her knees ached. Her palms were raw. Perfect. The louder the palace sang, the quieter a knife could move. A queen made noise. A maid made nothing. “Move aside, filth.” The voice was silk over steel. Lian did not look up. She knew that voice. She had heard it whisper in her ear the night Caelan’s dagger went in. She had heard it laugh as her blood turned the snow red. Lysandra. The new Crown Princess. The woman who stole her throne, her man, her life. The woman who had driven the second blade. A shadow fell over Lian. Expensive perfume. Jasmine and poison. The kind of scent that lingered in a room after a corpse was removed. “Did you hear me?” Lysandra’s jade slipper kicked water onto Lian’s hands. Cold. Deliberate. “I said move.” The other maids had already scattered. No one wanted to be near a storm. No one wanted to be the reason a maid disappeared. Lian stood. Slow. Head down. “Forgive me, Your Highness.” Lysandra was beautiful. That was the worst part. Black hair like ink. Lips red as a fresh wound. Eyes like a cat’s. Eyes that had watched Aurelia drown and called it mercy. Lysandra circled her. Like a wolf circling prey. Like a woman who had killed once and wanted to do it again. “You’re new,” she said. “What’s your name?” “Lian, Your Highness.” “Lian.” Lysandra tasted the name. She rolled it on her tongue like poison. “You do not kneel like the others.” Lian kept her forehead to the ground. “I was taught to survive, Your Highness.” A sharp laugh. “Survive?” Lysandra crouched. Her fingers caught Lian’s chin and forced her head up. Her nails were sharp. “Look at me, maid.” Lian obeyed. Brown eyes. Dull. Empty. The herbs held. No gold showed. No dragon. Just a dead girl in a servant’s skin. Lysandra frowned. She was searching for something. A ghost. A face from a nightmare. The face of the woman she had helped murder. “You look familiar,” she murmured. Her thumb pressed harder into Lian’s jaw. Lian’s heart was ice. “All servants look the same to nobles, Your Highness.” Another sharp laugh. But this one had teeth. “Clever.” Lysandra released her. She stood. “Tell me, Lian. Have you seen the Prince lately? He’s been… distracted.” Lian’s hands clenched behind her back. Then relaxed. Vales did not show pain. “I serve tea, Your Highness. I do not watch men.” “Liar.” The word was a slap. Lysandra’s hand shot out. Fast. She grabbed a fistful of Lian’s hair and yanked her up. Pain exploded across Lian’s scalp. Her eyes watered. She did not make a sound. “You think I don’t know?” Lysandra hissed. Her face was inches away. Her breath was jasmine and wine. “He smells like other women now. Like smoke. Like secrets. Like someone he shouldn’t remember.” Lian did not scream. She did not cry. She met Lysandra’s eyes. And for half a second, she let the mask slip. Not gold. But something older. Something colder. The look of a woman who had died and come back to collect. Lysandra froze. “What…” Lian dropped her gaze. “Forgive me, Your Highness. I am only a maid.” Lysandra shoved her back. Hard. Lian hit the stone path. Her palms scraped. Skin tore. “Clean this pond until it shines,” Lysandra spat. “If one leaf remains, I will have your tongue.” She turned and walked away. Her maids followed like a flock of black birds. Whispering. Smiling. Lian stayed on the ground. She looked at her scraped palms. Blood welled. Red. Human. Weak. Then, slowly, a thin line of gold seeped into the cut. It stitched the skin closed. No scar. No pain. As if the wound had never been. No one saw. The butterflies did not tell. Lian rose. She picked up the brush. So you’re afraid. Good. Lysandra did not know why she was afraid. But fear was a leash. And Lian had just found the end of it. She scrubbed the stone. Methodical. Silent. Each stroke was a promise. _________ In the palace above, Caelan was in a meeting. Maps. Borders. Grain taxes. He did not know his lover and his ghost had met. He did not know the garden had bled. That night, Lian returned to his chambers. Caelan was waiting. He was not sitting. He was standing by the fire. “You were in the gardens today,” he said. No greeting. “Yes, Your Highness.” “You met the Crown Princess.” It was not a question. Lian knelt. “Yes.” “What did she do?” “She accused me of being in your bed, Your Highness.” Caelan’s eyes flashed. Gray turned to steel. “Did you tell her you were?” Lian lifted her head. Her brown eyes were clear. Honest. Empty. The eyes of a girl who had nothing to lie about. “No, Your Highness. Because I am not.” Silence. Caelan walked to her. He crouched, just like Lysandra had. But his fingers did not grab. They touched her scraped palm. Gentle. Investigating. “You’re hurt.” “It’s nothing.” He stared at the cut. Or where the cut had been. The skin was smooth. Unbroken. He frowned. “You’re either the most loyal maid in the palace,” he said softly, “or the most dangerous liar.” Lian said nothing. Loyalty was a word men used before they betrayed you. Caelan stood. “Clean yourself. You will serve me at dinner tomorrow. The Emperor will be there.” He left. No explanation. No apology. Lian was alone again. She looked at her palm. The cut was gone. Only a faint gold line remained. A thread of light under her skin. Dinner with the Emperor. With Caelan. With Lysandra. All of them in one room. All of her enemies at one table. Lian smiled. It was not a servant’s smile. It was not kind. Phase two was no longer a whisper. It was a blade being drawn. _________ She did not sleep that night. She sat by the window of the servant’s quarters. The other maids slept. Or pretended to. The East Wing was never quiet. There were always screams. She thought of Lysandra’s hands in her hair. She thought of Caelan’s fingers on her palm. She thought of the Emperor’s crown. Black iron. No jewels. The Emperor was old. Sick. He had not left his bed in a year. But he still ruled. Because fear did not need legs. If she could make him look at her… If she could make him doubt Caelan… If she could make them all look at each other instead of her… The golden blood pulsed once. Yes. Aurelia Vale had died twice. Lian would make them die a thousand times. She lay down. She did not close her eyes. She waited for dawn. Tomorrow, she would serve dinner. Tomorrow, the shadows would meet.
