SHADOWS IN THE TEA

The Crown Prince’s chambers were quiet. Too quiet. Lian stood with her back to the wall, hands clasped, eyes down. The mask of a perfect maid. Invisible. Silent. Harmless. The mask she had worn to survive the Abyss. Caelan had not spoken to her since he told her to leave. He sat by the window, a scroll in his lap, untouched. The moonlight made his face look carved from stone. Cold. Unreadable. He was thinking. Aurelia knew that look. He used to wear it before he decided who to ruin. Before he signed the order to kill her. “Tea,” he said finally, without looking at her. She moved. Silent. Precise. The tea set was silver. Expensive. Cold to the touch. The steam curled like a ghost between them. Her hands did not shake. The golden blood in her veins was silent now. Sleeping. Waiting. A dragon coiled in the dark. She set the cup beside him. Close enough for him to take. Far enough that he had to reach. A small act of control. Caelan’s eyes flicked to her. Gray. Sharp. “You are not afraid,” he said. It was not a question. Lian kept her gaze on the floor. “Fear is a luxury, Your Highness.” A pause. “Look at me.” She obeyed. Slowly. Her dull brown eyes met his gray ones. She let him see nothing. No hate. No recognition. Just a servant. He studied her. Like a hunter studying a new animal in his forest. Like a man who had been betrayed once, and would not be betrayed twice. “You broke Eunuch Han’s wrist,” he said. “With your hands.” “Yes, Your Highness.” No lie. No apology. No fear. “Why?” “He touched what was not his.” Another pause. Longer. The room felt smaller. Caelan picked up the tea. He did not drink. He swirled it. Watching the surface. Watching for poison. Watching for her. “I do not like disobedient servants,” he said softly. “They are unpredictable. Dangerous.” “Then dismiss me, Your Highness.” His eyes snapped to hers. Sharp. Most maids would beg. Cry. Grovel. Cut their own tongues to stay. Lian did none of those things. She met his stare and did not look away. Caelan’s mouth twitched. Not a smile. Something colder. Something like recognition. “Interesting,” he murmured. “Very interesting.” He drank the tea. Aurelia’s heart did not move. But inside, the dragon opened one eye. He drank it. He trusts no one. So why did he drink? Because he wanted to see if she would poison him. And she had not. Not yet. “Your name is Lian,” he said. “Yes.” “It does not suit you.” Her blood went cold. Ice over fire. He set the cup down. The sound was loud. “You carry yourself like someone who has held a sword. Not a broom.” Lian knelt. Fast. Forehead to the floor. “I was a soldier’s daughter, Your Highness. Before the war took my house. I learned to fight to survive.” It was a lie wrapped in truth. House Vale was dead. Taken by war. Taken by him. Caelan was silent. She could hear his breath. Slow. Measured. Then he stood. He walked to her. She did not flinch. Vales did not flinch. He reached down. His fingers caught her chin and lifted her face. His skin was cold. His thumb brushed her cheek. Right over the place where the herb paste was thickest. Where the gold hid. For a second, the brown dulled. A flicker of gold showed beneath. Like lightning under water. Caelan’s eyes narrowed to slits. “What are you hiding?” he whispered. Lian did not answer. She could not. Her throat was dry. Her blood was screaming. His grip tightened. And then… A knock at the door. “Your Highness!” A guard’s voice. Panicked. Breathless. “Assassin in the West Wing! He killed three men!” Caelan released her instantly. He was already moving, sword at his side. All softness gone. Only the Crown Prince remained. “Stay here,” he ordered. He did not look back as he left. The door slammed. _________ Lian was alone. She exhaled. Once. Her hand went to her cheek. Where he had touched her. Her skin burned. Not from his fingers. From the gold under her skin. Too close. She had almost been found. One second more and the gold would have shown. One second more and she would have had to kill him. She walked to the window. The palace below was chaos. Torches. Shouts. Men running with spears. An assassin. Real or fake, she did not know. But the timing was perfect. Too perfect. She looked at the empty teacup on the table. Caelan had left it half full. A test. And she had passed. She had not flinched. She had not poisoned. But he was suspicious now. `Good.` Suspicion was better than pity. Suspicion meant he was watching. And the watched always made mistakes. Lian’s lips curved. A small, cold smile. It did not reach her eyes. “Run, Crown Prince,” she whispered to the empty room. “Run faster.” Because the dragon was learning your steps. Because the dragon was learning your fear. _________ Far away, in the West Wing, a guard died with a broken neck. No blade. No poison. Just force. No one saw who did it. The assassin had vanished like smoke. In the Prince’s chambers, a maid straightened her mask. She smoothed her sleeves. The gold was hidden again. Phase two had begun. Get close. Make him doubt. Make him need her. Then cut him where it hurts most. The teacup sat on the table. Half full. Cold now. Like the heart of the man who had drunk from it.
