chapter 15

Delilah I woke up this morning feeling drowsy. I spent more than an hour and thirty minutes in the bathroom, sitting down instead of actually taking my bath. I chose not to apply any makeup because I was too tired to do it. After getting dressed, I went to my shoe rack and stared at the heels for at least five minutes but at the end, I chose flats. Something I've never worn ever since my return to New York. I walked into the dining table to see my family rounding up breakfast. "I was about to send Luisa up to call you" my dad said with a mouth full of lasagna "You always taught me not to talk with a mouth filled with food dad?"Lucas chastised I ignored both of them and sat down as Luisa served me a plate. "Aren't you going to work today Delilah? It's almost 7 and you aren't even properly dressed yet?" I looked down at my cloth slightly confused as to why he would think am not ready for work. "Am dressed and ready dad" Lucas choked on his water but I simply just ignored them altogether and focused on breakfast which isn't even appetizing. "Your face is clad of make up Del" "What is wrong with that?" He gave dad a quick glance before returning to me "you never step out without makeup" "Yes Delilah, and not that I think you aren't pretty but makeup makes you look smarter" my dad chipped in Thanks Dad...I dropped my fork "am not just in the mood for it this morning that's all". I stood up and Luisa was at my side immediately to clear the plates. "Sit down Delilah and finish your breakfast. You were the last to join us and you want to be the first to leave?" I sat down again but made no attempt to touch the food. "What's your schedule like today Delilah?" Dad asked "Just bunch of meetings" "That isn't an answer Delilah" I rolled my eyes "I have meeting with, the West's clients and also a meeting with A&G cooperations, I also have a meeting with the Grey's at our company then few signings" "You have a meeting with the Grey's" Lucas asked, his voice a little surprised "Yes I have a meeting with them. Is there a problem?" He cleared his throat "no... No problem at all. What is the meeting all about?" Jesus... I'm not in the mood for his questioning right now. I feel very tired, too tired for unnecessary upcoming argument. "The meeting is about business" He rubbed his finger across his brows. "I know it's about business. Are you... You know... Are you guys kicking off the project?" "That's next week, the Grey's are yet to bring in their share of the money" "Isn't that your fault?" He murmured I eyed him skeptically "what did you just say?" He picked up his glass of wine "nothing...I didn't say anything" Does he think am dumb or deaf? "I heard you Lucas, you said 'isn't that your fault?' and I want to know why you asked me that?" He stood up abruptly "I need to get to work. I'll see you at the office Del" "Don't forget tonight is the fundraiser" my father reminded me I stood up quickly with Lucas but I got hit with a wave of dizziness that had my ass back on the seat. Dad and Lucas rushed me. "Are you okay Del? I knew something was wrong the moment you appeared without makeup this morning" "Am calling the doctor" Peter my dad said, already pulling out his phone but I stopped him "Dad that's not necessary, am fine" "You're fine? You call nearly kissing the floor fine?" Lucas snapped "call the doctor dad, something is definitely wrong with her" I slowly stood up, took my bag and car key from the table, and slowly walked towards the entrance door. "Where are you going Del? Didn't you hear Dad say he's going to call the doctor?" "Didn't you hear me say am fine?" I asked You are fine? Fine!!! You call this?" He waved his hands down my body "you call this fine? You tell us nothing about your hospital results, you come out looking like hell and you almost fainted and you say you are fine!!!?" He took a deep breath "come back here Del, you are seeing the doctor and that's final" I had to laugh at him out of faustration, out of anger, out of pain "I am fine Lucas and I am not seeing a doctor, you know why? Because it's my decision. I might owe you and your father my life and I will spend the rest of my life paying it. But you see this decision about me and my health, I f*****g get to decide it" "Don't you dare swear before me Delilah, I forbid you" my father chastised I felt the anger in my veins, I don't know what to blame it on, the sickness? The fact that not less than two days back, he referred to Lucas as his only child and today, he is playing father figure with me? "Am sorry father for swearing but you don't have to worry about my health, I think you should worry more about your only child. But while you are at that, I'll be on my way to the office" They both stared at me with eyes filled with surprise as I left the house. Things went on fine at the office, expect for the one time I emptied the lasagna into the toilet and how I did everything at an extremely slow pace. "Ma, the Grey's are here" I blinked the fog from my eyes "take them to the conference room, I'll be there shortly" She nodded then left and closed the door. I opened my bag and brought out my pills, I took more than the normal dosage. The last people who I want to see me weak is Juliana and Lucas. I collected my laptop and walked into the conference room. I didn't expect to see Lucas sitting with the team from the Grey's so I called him out privately to talk to him. "What are you doing here Lucas? Shouldn't you be handling something in your office?" "I don't want you facing them alone, so I decided to join you" What the... "What the hell is that? An excuse to be there? For Christ sake Lucas I've been meeting with alone for the past few months. So why are you there?" He squared his shoulders in a defensive stance "how about I ask you why you don't want me there Del? Why don't you want me there?" I guess I'll have to keep an eye on him too because I don't understand this new sneaky behavior of his. "Fine... You are free to join us, you know why? Because I have nothing to hide. I also hope you don't have something to hide too" I walked back to the conference room with him behind me. We all got settled and we began to discuss what brought us together. New idea were presented, some which was rejected and some accepted. At the end of the meeting, we all stood for a handshake. As I stood up to shake Jake, I saw double of his hands, I blinked to clear my vision but it didn't help. "Miss Davidson are you okay?" Jake asked me I opened my mouth to respond but the room began to spin, Jake caught me before I dropped to the floor then everything went black.
