FFMSD – 20

KYLE It has been the hardest week for me, and I just couldn’t face the world or anyone else. I could not allow myself to see or speak to Yolanda because of what happened during the truck hijacking. My legs are temporarily disabled from the bullet that almost hit my nervous system. I am going to kill Capo for this. He just went and put more trauma to my body despite knowing my past; now I am stuck in this f*****g wheelchair for God knows how long! This just took me back to the day I fell off the building. It was a very traumatic event for me. I thought my dreams had died the moment I fell off that building and fractured a few bones, but the Alpha gave me another chance and I saw myself competing again in parkour jumping, but now just when I thought I was going to move on someday from the ordeal, I am back to square one. The Alpha really said some things that really touched me, and one thing that stood out for me was that he called me his son. He said that he wished to have sons and I am just sent to him for a reason, so I should fight for my life. I thought I was going die due to the loss of blood, but I made it and I can finally be with Yolanda again, but now things got even harder because Alpha expects me NOT to date any of his daughters, yet here I am, deeply in love with his stepdaughter. Sigh. I miss my girl so much, but I don’t know how she is going to react when she sees me like this. I can hardly do a lot of things on my own; I need assistance, which is why my mother is here, and she is pushing that I go to the police station and report the shooting because I kind of lied to her about it and said there was a robbery at some shop and I happened to fight one of the robbers and got myself shot. I cannot possibly tell her the truth because, in her eyes, I am his sweet little boy. You can say that I am a mama’s boy. “Kyle, I am going to switch to the news now, I hope that you don’t mind,” My mother says, sitting next to me on the couch with a glass of water in her hand. “I do not mind, ma; but can I ask you for a favour first, please?” “Of course, son. What do you need?” “My phone is in the guest room drawer. Can you please get it for me?” When she says yes, she stands and heads to the guestroom that I temporarily use since I cannot get myself up and down. As soon as she comes back, she settles down and watches the news while I turn my phone on, and as soon as it connects to the network and Wi-Fi, it is flooded with messages and all kinds of notifications. I am happy when I see Yolanda’s name and her number appearing constantly, and to be honest, I was hopeful that I get at least something that convinces me that she cares about me, and seeing all her messages, I know that she cares and loves me. “Babe, it is me again. I miss you so much. I don’t know what is going on, and I am just not sure if it is right to come to your place without my father finding out, but I really would love to see you. Uhm, I love you,” I smile to myself after listening to her voice message. She is such a sweet girl to even text me so much without giving up even though my phone was off. I have to call her and let her know that we are still on the same page. Gosh, I love her so much. “God! What is happening to our city? Why is this Alpha untouchable?” My mother shouts, aggravatedly as she is watching the news. I quickly look up and ask her to turn the volume up because I notice the two trucks we hijacked. “A quick update on the Mozambican truck hijacking. Questions that are asked are if the police were involved or not. That is the question I will leave to all the viewers. Please use the hashtag below on the screen and tell us your thoughts about it. It is confirmed by the president that the two trucks were carrying a crown that was presented to him as a gift by the Chief of Mozambique. It is said that the crown was worth three hundred thousand worth of diamonds, and the second truck was carrying other important stuff for the president. This was after the president hosted the chief and gave them the best hospitality during their stay, and this was the chief’s way of thanking him. With the progress of the investigation, it was found that the Alpha is indeed the one behind the truck hijacking because after the trucks were found dumped in the bushes near N1, two black cards with a wolf were found in them. If anyone has any idea about who the Alpha is, the president is asking that you please come forward, and if you are scared, the state will protect your identity, and there will be a reward for it. The details are on the screen below,” I wonder if Alpha has seen this yet. I heard he went on a business trip and his phones are off. It can really get messy in his absence, and as much as I hate Capo right now, I hope that he can put everything under control in the pack house. Yes, we have a pack house, warehouse, storage house, you name it, and all of them have their own purposes. The packhouse is like our escape house where we just chill and take it as a vacation. “Oh, I wish I had an idea who this Alpha was and just send him over. I hate him! I would even reveal my identity for him to see how much I hate him and how much he destroyed people. We are living in fear because of him!” My mother shouts, angrily. “Mom, let’s be honest… the Alpha does not attack people unless they provoke him. I think that it is only fair – an eye for an eye,” Unexpectedly, she smacks my head. “Nonsense! Who is he to decide to end a person’s life?” “Mom! Okay, see it this way. Why do you think he let go of the drivers? They were harmless,” I explain. “You sound so sure, Kyle…” She crosses her hands and turns her focus on me. “Are you sure that you are not the Alpha?” Before I could answer her, the intercom buzzes and my mother gets up to check it. Before she answers, she describes the person on the screen and my heart starts pounding. I tell her not to answer but just open the gate for them. A minute later, I hear the doorbell, and I ask my mother to help me sit upright since my legs were lying on the couch. *** YOLANDA My heart is heavily beating. With dad gone, I managed to call a cab to get me to Kyle’s place. I had to find a way of getting myself here without the guards reporting to my father. Dear mom, if you can hear my heart, please protect me. After the gate was opened, I walked in and got to the front door. I am tempted to enter the door code, but at the same time I am a bit sceptical, so I ring the bell and the door gets opened in less than a minute. I gasp, surprised when I see a mid-aged looking woman with a welcoming smile on her face. I won’t lie and say it did not cross my mind that Kyle is probably with another woman, but I do not doubt that this is his mother. Kyle has this woman’s physical features. “Hi, come in. Well, you can at least tell me your name and I will leave you as my son strictly asked me to let you in and not ask any questions,” She emphasises, making Kyle aware that she is talking about him. “Mom, come on!” Kyle shouts from wherever he is. I giggle as his mother shrugs. “I am Yolanda Bennett, ma’am,” I stretch my hand for a handshake, but she hugs me instead. “You must be the reason that my son only sees me once a month. You are so pretty, and you have gorgeous skin,” “Thank you so much, ma’am,” “Argh, stop with that… just call me Lydia,” I look at her with hesitation. We black people and them–coloured people are different. They do not mind calling each other by their names, despite being an elder or a child, but for me, it is a different story. I would definitely be thrown with a shoe if I ever called any elder by their name. “Would it be better if I call you mom, at least?” “Way better! Come on in; your man is waiting in the lounge,” She says and asks if I would like anything to drink. I just need to see my man, but it would be rude to say no so… “Water will be fine, thank you,” I know my way around the house if I need anything more. “Kyle,” I run towards him, and as I expected him to get up the couch to catch me, spin me around, and kiss me; he does not. He looks pale and sick. He looks… different. What is wrong with my baby? “Kyle, baby… I am so happy to see you,” I take off my bag and sit on him. He wraps his arms around my waist, and we kiss, fervently. “I am so sorry. I know that you are mad at me, and I hate that I made you think that you were the problem, but I promise you it was nothing like that. I passed out and my phone was on silent, so I did not hear it ring. I was not trying to avoid you, I promise,” My tears stream out as I think about the real reason that brought us here today. It breaks my heart that I cannot be honest with him about it, but this is how it should be. He wipes the tears on my face with his hands and pecks my lips. “I am the one who is sorry, baby. I just got my phone on right now, and I listened and read all your text messages. I…” His mother gets back with my glass of water, and I respectfully get off Kyle before I accept the glass of water and thank her. As she leaves, I now sit next to Kyle and drink half of the glass before I place it on the coffee table. “As I was saying, I am sorry I overreacted and caused you to panic. I was actually about to call you right now, and…” “Babe, please look at me,” It is weird that we are having a serious conversation, yet he cannot look me in the eye. “I cannot, babe… I cannot turn my neck,” “Why?” I ask, cautiously. He sighs, landing his hand on my thigh. “We do need to talk, Yolanda.” *** Finding out that my man almost lost his life to some low-life thugs in a shop got me crying. Now he cannot walk because of them, and his neck is in pain due to the bullet wound on his upper back near his spine. I am truly heartbroken, but I am happy that he is alive. “I thought I had lost you, but I almost lost you for good,” I cry, lying my head on his chest. “But I am here, baby. We can be together forever. I love you so much, princess,” “I love you too, Kyle.” The doorbell rings and Kyle’s mother announces that she had forgotten to close the gate after I got in, so she walks to get the door open. “So, my schoolmates are planning a weekend getaway to celebrate “pens down”. I do not want to go, but I was planning on telling dad that I want to go, so that I can be here with you,” I announce. “Really, are you sure about that, babe? Don’t you want to go and make last memories with your mates?” I raise my head and smile, shaking my head. “I would rather be here with you. I love you, Kyle,” I confess. “Come here, baby girl,” I move my face closer to him, and just when we were about to kiss, someone clears their throat, and I look up behind Kyle… I am in real deep s**t. I probably look like I am seeing a ghost right now. “Love, you are tense… what is wrong? Who is behind?” Kyle asks. I feel the tears burning my eyes, and I just know that I am as good as dead.
