If this man is a murderer then at least he’s a gentlemen. He walked with me to the passenger side of his truck and opened the door for me. He has an older truck with one long seat, a gear shifter, and a radio with no aux or Bluetooth that a country station is playing from. I don’t not like country music I’ve just never really listened to it. When he gets in the drivers seat I sit there awkwardly internally cursing myself for how I decided to dress. He put the truck into gear and we started making our way through the snow. I’ve never been great at sitting in silence so of course I have to say something.
“I’m Camry by the way” If I’m going to be spending a few days with him I should probably introduce myself
“Jack”
“Anyone ever offer you magic beans?” I laugh at my own joke but he does not. He scrunches his eyebrows together like that’s the stupidest thing he’s ever heard before saying “No”.
We sit in silence for a minute before an announcement comes over the radio.
“Well folks I hope you stocked up on supplies because it looks like you will be snowed in for the next 7 to 8 days..” my eyes went wide not hearing anything else the man on the radio says
“Don’t worry, I prepared for the weather” He reassures me like that’s what I’m worried about
“Probably didn’t prepare to have company though huh?” I awkwardly laugh
He doesn’t say anything to that and I sink into my seat even more trying to become as small and unnoticeable as possible. My mother always said I would say dumb things when I was in uncomfortable situations. I see lights in the distance and I’m assuming it’s his cabin. The drive up to it is beautiful, there are lights on both sides lining the driveway. He has lights hanging all around the cabin and the mix of the them and the snow is gorgeous.
“We’re here” He puts the truck in park
“It’s so pretty, my mom never lets me hang lights outside the cabin she says they look tacky” I’m not sure why I tell him that
“Ok..” he says like he’s not really sure how to respond
I follow him inside the smell of cedar and pine invading my nose. He has a single couch and table with a bear skin rug under it in front of a fire place. The place is small but cozy, the kitchen connects to the living room and from the looks there is only one room.
“Are you hungry?” He turns to face me but not looking me in the eye
“Um.. yeah actually I am” Him asking that made me realize I haven’t eaten anything today
“I have some vegetable soup I’ll heat up for us” Vegetable soup is perfect for this kind of weather. That mixed with the fire place gives off the perfect Christmas vibes.
“Sounds good” He nods before reiterating into the kitchen
I notice he doesn’t have a TV and with my phone not having any service I can already tell I am going to be going crazy. It’s not that I’m addicted to my phone or anything but I didn’t bring anything to entertain myself. Maybe there’s a TV in the bedroom, there’s no way this man doesn’t have one.
My thoughts are interrupted when he walks in with two bowls and hands me one. I almost drop my bowl because he’s taken his jacket off and I wasn’t prepared for the sight of him. His hands are huge with veins running through them all the way up his arms which are also huge. He has a well maintained beard his hair is short on the sides and a little longer on the top. I’m 5’7 which is pretty tall for girl and he still towers over me I bet he’s no shorter than 6’5. To sum it up, he’s f*****g hot.
“Thank you” I shake my head. Stop gawking at the guy Camry I tell myself
He just nods sitting down on the couch and I follow.
“You don’t have TV?” I ask. I’m not an iPad kid but I like to watch TV while I eat
“No” is all he says
He’s not much of a talker which isn’t good because I don’t know when to shut up.
“Why?” I’m genuinely curious as to why someone wouldn’t have a TV
He just shrugs and of course I keep talking.
“I love TV, my favorite show right now is American Horror Story. Every season is something different and its the most off the wall s**t”
He nods his head acknowledging what I said but still not responding.
“So how do you like keep up with the news and stuff?” I ask him
“Well there’s a little thing your generation forgot exists called a newspaper.” I know what a newspaper is, a**hole. “And I have a radio” he points at the mantle above he fire place
“Right, right. But what do you do to entertain yourself?” The place is pretty bare so I don’t see any forms of entertainment
“I have books” He huffs out seemingly annoyed
“I like books” I perk up hoping maybe we can have something to talk about now
“I bet you do” he says and I think I see him roll his eyes
“Am I annoying you? My mom says I talk to much especially in awkward situations which is true but I just think talking through something awkward is better than sitting there silently” If there is awkward silence I will fill it, I’ve been that way since I was little.
“I have to disagree” It’s going to be a long week for him
“Are you like this with all the girls you rescue and bring back to your cabin?” It come out really sarcastically but that’s what I was going for
He lets out a small laugh and continues eating his soup. I am going to drive this poor man insane.
